Tiger Woods Opts Out of U.S. Open, Quicken Loans

Tiger Woods isn’t ready to stage a comeback just yet.

The 14-time major champion sent messages via Twitter and his website Tuesday that he would not be competing at either the U.S. Open at Oakmont next week or the PGA Tour’s Quicken Loans tournament the following week.

Tiger Woods, U.S. Open, Quicken Loans National, Golf “While I continue to work hard on getting healthy, I am not physically ready to play in this year’s U.S. Open and the Quicken Loans National,” Woods wrote on his website. “I am making progress, but I’m not yet ready for tournament competition.”

“I haven’t set any date for when I’m playing again, which is frustrating to say,” Woods said in Houston this past April. “But to be honest with you, that’s what I’ve had to do. I’ve had to go with that mindset.”

Woods underwent multiple surgeries and other procedures for his ailing back in the past year. The former world’s No. 1 golfer hasn’t won a major championship since the 2008 U.S. Open, and he only completed two of the last nine majors. He missed the cut in four of them, and injuries prevented him from completing three others.

“I want to thank everyone for their continued support,” Woods penned via the web. “The positive texts, emails and calls I have received have been incredible. I want to wish Mike Davis, Diana Murphy, the USGA, the players and everyone at Oakmont a very successful week.

“I will be hosting and attending my foundation’s tournament, the Quicken Loans National, at Congressional. It’s the 10th year of our tournament, and we continue to support the community, the military and the programs of the Tiger Woods Foundation.”

The announcement didn’t surprise anyone. At a recent press event at Congressional, media members witnessed Woods dropping three consecutive wedge shots into the water, a sure sign that his game is not yet ready for PGA Tour competition.

Unless his recovery moves at a quicker pace, he’s likely to miss the Open Championship at Royal Troon and the PGA Championship at Baltusrol later this year, effectively bypassing the 2016 season. Fans will see him at the Ryder Cup, however, albeit as a vice captain of the U.S. squad.
