Each and every day, over one hundred and thirty five million people head out to work in the Unites States alone. Now just think of how much better this world could become if millions of the jobs they went to were in the fields of renewable energy, sustainable agriculture, and even green building. Our two most important and critical concerns regarding our own survival is how to make a living and support our family, as well as how to better the environment we live in – so combining those two issues would really solve a lot of problems. Not to mention, by doing this, we could make America’s economy stronger – while at the same time making it greener. And the first thing we have to do is provide the training that will turn 20th-century blue-collar jobs into safe, secure, happy and much-needed 21st-century green-collar jobs.
If you consider the facts, there is a huge economy developing in the ‘green sectors.’ Renewable energy and energy efficiency technologies generated over 8.5 million new jobs, and nearly $970 billion in revenue. According to the National Renewable Energy Lab, the major barriers to bringing on renewable energy and energy efficiency in force is, quite simply, that America needs to be provided with the skills and training necessary to do the jobs! By providing the right skill set, green-collar jobs could literally rebuild, reunite and rejuvenate the American people. This industry could provide the right path out of poverty, and at the same time strengthen all of our urban and rural communities, by protecting our own health and the health of the planet we need to pay attention to.
Green-collar jobs are also well-paid, career track jobs that contribute directly to preserving environmental quality. Like blue-collar jobs, green-collar jobs pay good wages and provide opportunities for advancement. And the amazing part is that there are a myriad of sectors that green-collar jobs appear in – giving all Americans the ultimate choice of which ‘green’ direction they would like to go in.
Take the world of ‘wind,’ for instance. As this huge industry consolidation continues, the biggest trend in ‘wind’ jobs are involving global players who have the finances to bring turbines to market in the vast quantities that are going to be needed. This growth is creating much-improved conditions for many of the smaller wind-focused companies who collectively provide the entire group of specialist services necessary if the industry is to grow. And, by the way, the recent pressures on the global oil market can only improve wind’s position within the development policies of governments. What does that mean? More jobs!
Larger and larger turbines need to be developed. In fact, future turbines of 7.5MW are right now in the development and testing stage. This growth in turbine size is beyond encouraging for the planet, and is enabling existing wind farm sites and new off-shore farms to be refurbished and updated. There is a high demand for technical expertise in the Wind Energy Job Sector. Everything from PR, community liaisons, environmental impact officers, and more; and the bigger the category becomes, the more companies are desperately searching for capable and energetic individuals which means a huge potential is possible to succeed in an industry which is growing faster than any other. Not to mention, with the international growth of the industry skyrocketing, there will be a great need for individuals who can speak multiple languages.
Then, we turn to the “Marine (Tidal Energy)” industry. The diversity of the world’s marine environments where we could essentially ‘tap’ tidal energy, has made it so the marine sector will emerge as one of the largest group of green-collar jobs imaginable. From tidal stream devices to tidal barrage technology, workers and engineers are in high demand for the creation, building and installation of devices that will have a clear, helpful impact on the local marine ecosystems. Another issue when it comes to the marine world of green-collar jobs are artificial tidal lagoons. The exploration of the tidal barrage concept has encouraged the concept of impounding water for both electricity generation and energy storage. These lagoons are now being seriously considered as a cheaper and more environmentally-sound method of developing temporary potential energy.
More and more colleges across the country are offering degrees in the field of ‘Bio-energy,’ being able to convert raw sources of biomass into high energy green fuels such as, Bio-diesels, ethanol, syngas and methanol. Jobs in all sectors, from building to creation to research and development continue to grow in the vast fields that are included in Bio-energy technology. Take ‘Energy Crops,’ for instance. Scientists and farmers are working on improved strains of energy crops, which are being sought-out by huge companies like GM. And they most assuredly need a power force ‘team’ of workers to make these bio-energy products available.
Landfill sites have also become a core part of the emissions reduction strategy of governments in many countries, as well as techniques to extract and utilize the gas mix. Co-firing and combined heat and power processes are also improving in terms of higher quality of the end product. Smaller and more economic machines and improved techniques are allowing people to prosper in many parts of the rural and agricultural world.
Then you must consider green building jobs, as well as careers in the solar, carbon, climate and financial sectors.
