Takata Air Bag Recall Could Affect 40 Million U.S. Vehicles

Safety air bags on as many as 40 million U.S. automobiles are on the Takata Corporation’s short list for recalls, according to published reports this week.

The Japanese air bag manufacturer has been under pressure by U.S. transportation officials to Air Bag recall, safety, U.S. automobiles, Takata CorporationNHTSA, defective Takata air bag list replace air bag inflators that could be defective and cause metal shards to fly outward from a deployed air bag. Takata air bags have been the source of the largest automobile safety recall ever, and it could be getting a lot bigger.

Eleven deaths have been attributed worldwide to defective Takata air bags, which deploy with too much force and, in some cases, have been known to send pieces of metal throughout a car’s passenger compartment.

Fourteen automakers have initiated their own recalls of 24 million automobiles. But early this week, talk within the industry suggested that Takata is preparing to announce a recall of an additional 35 million to 40 million vehicles.

Neither Takata nor the U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) would comment on the rumors of a larger recall. “NHTSA has reviewed the findings of three separate investigations into the Takata air bag ruptures,” said NHTSA spokesman Bryan Thomas. “The recall of Takata air bag inflators continues and the agency will take all appropriate actions to make sure air bags in Americans’ vehicles are safe.”

“Takata is working with regulators and our automaker customers to develop long-term, orderly solutions to these important safety issues,” said Takata spokesman Jared Levy. On Tuesday he would not confirm that Takata would expand its air bag recall.

Last month, NHTSA said there were about 85 million unrecalled Takata air bag inflators in U.S. vehicles that need to be proven safe or recalled by 2019.

The rumored new recall would make repairs to inflators in all front-compartment air bags that do not have a drying agent, and about 35 million passenger-side and some driver-side air bags without a drying agent. It is also expected to include some air bags that were previously replaced that did not have a drying agent.
