Cubs V. Mets: Youth, Predictions & A Whole Lot of Fun

By Amy Lignor

Yes, the Mets lead. Game 1 is in their win column, but if they think those Cubs are going down easily, they should think again.

Cubs vs MetsThis is one of the very first times in the sports nation where baseball may just be garnering as many headlines as football (the real American pastime), which is almost never seen. Not to bash baseball, of course, but the football hype, rivalries, and teams yapping at each other all the time leave sports reporters with no space left to place an article about baseball. But the Cubs v. Mets have changed all that. No surprise, this is one rivalry that will always be one of the best stories ever written.

The Cubs are in the most amazing drought of all time. This, we know. They are still surrounded by jinxes and hexes, etc. This, too, we know. But now they are surrounded by odd predictions coming from the strangest of places; predictions that happen to be on their side. Not experts in sports, mind you, but a writer in Hollywood who actually made a “joke” way back when on the big screen in one of the best franchise series ever made, Back to the Future. In the sequel to this high-grossing movie, there was a moment in the future (AKA: 2015) that said the Cubs did win it all. Could a Hollywood writer have been psychic?

Actually…no. It was in 1989 that he stated in “Back to the Future, II” that the Cubs would win the 2015 World Series, but the man was making a huge joke. He is actually a major St. Louis Cardinals fan. But wouldn’t it be funny…or perhaps fate, itself, to have this one prediction come true?

This has created such a vibe for Cubs fans that many will most likely run out to a special showing on Wednesday of this week when “Part II” returns to theaters. It is just for this one day – the exact same day of the NL Championship Game 4 with the Cubs hosting the Mets.

It’s important to remember, however, that in reality the Cubs did have a 7-0 record against the Mets this year heading into this rivalry of all rivalries. The Mets were swept by the Cubs, and on July 2nd of this year they managed only one run against the Cubs in the three-game series that was played.

But…is it that easy when it comes to the Championship Series? The Mets have already racked up that first one, and chances are they are not about to believe some Hollywood prediction made decades ago. In fact, they will stick to the jinxes and the hexes when it comes to their rivals, and keep moving forward as fast as possible.

The biggest story about this matchup should be when it comes to age. These are young, vibrant players facing off. There are no “old fogies” getting ready for the Hall of Fame out there. The Mets have the young pitchers with arms that send the ball out like a rocket shooting through the sky. They have made headlines all their own. What they are faced with is the Cubs who have the best young hitters in the business.

Breakdown for the Mets, is Jacob deGrom, Matt Harvey, Noah Syndergaard and Steven Matz. These pitchers are all under the age of twenty-eight, with two making their MLB debuts this season. Heck, they’re barely out of high school when you think about it. They went from Little League to the Big League as if it was only yesterday. Combined, they have struck out 593 batters in 566 innings when this series first began.

But…bring on the hitters. The Cubs are not without massive weapons when it comes to their young hitters who led baseball – all of baseball – with over 1,500 strikeouts in the regular season.

No matter what, this series that will go down in the history books alongside all the rest, is going to be a whole lot of fun to watch; with most people (no offense to Mets’ fans out there) eager to see the Cubs break the jinx, and cause a Hollywood writer (AKA: St. Louis fan) to cry over ever making the joke that the Cubs won the World Series in 2015. If they do beat the Mets when all is said and done, this will definitely be a note to all writers out there to think before you speak.

Optimizing your Muzzleloader Sights Brad Fenson As a youngster anxious to get involved in hunting and shooting, my mentors encouraged me to use open sights. They also warned that someday I may only have open sights as an option, whether regulated in a specific … [Read More its Good for You...]

Log Cabins Become Staples in 21st Century Living By Amy Lignor   An old saying by an over-worked mom is: “Someday I’m going to take the cat and head to a log cabin in the woods.” The feline was always invited, but the kids driving her crazy were not. Over time, the log cabin became a part of various industries; even horror movies made sure that all the bad guys lived in a haunted cabin in the woods, a place that all the … [Read More its Good for You...]
