NASCAR Proves That They, Too, Can Be a Whole Lot of Fun to Watch!

 

Yes, there are a great deal of NASCAR fans, and the name ‘Jeff Gordon’ is also famous to many people. Or, at least they know who the guy is. There are tons of fans who love to sit in the stands, follow their heroes around the country from speedway to speedway, and watch these cars go around, and around, and around, and around…well, you get the point. Of course, when polls were taken, most NASCAR fans said they look for something exciting; some are even hoping for a fiery crash to make it just as fun as football. BUT, this particular weekend made it as fun as a ‘Rocky’ movie. In fact, the cars didn’t have much to do with the fun or the headlines – it was the rough and tumble boxing match between Jeff Gordon and Clint Bowyer and crews, that provided the most fun NASCAR has seen in decades!

 

Gloves off!! This is not exactly the ‘act of a champion’ by the way, but in incident number one, Jeff Gordon was more than a little ‘ripped’ on lap 305 at the AdvoCare 500 at Phoenix International Raceway on Sunday when Clint Bowyer ‘rubbed’ him the wrong way, yet again. Clint ‘traded paint,’ as the NASCAR fans call it, with Gordon’s car. And let’s just say Gordon made it a point to seek revenge on this one. In incident number two, Gordon waited until the second-to-last lap to send Bowyer’s car careening into the wall, unfortunately stopping Joey Lagano’s race in the process. A fire began, flags went up, and the other cars dead-stopped on the track because of the red flag, waiting for the green flag to reappear. What they saw instead of a flag, however, was a brawl between racers who should be old enough by now to not look that ridiculous on screen. The pit crews of each man entered the fire – some attempting to cool tempers, while others attempted to stand up for their ‘man’ and kick the ca-ca out of the other pit crew.

 

It all began with Gordon and a member of Bowyer’s pit crew beginning to fight about the lack of professionalism that Gordon showed on the speedway. This particular moment, of course, escalated beyond belief when all crew members of each team got involved. Was it done? Did Gordon finally realize he was looking like an idiot on television and spoiling his name so he stopped? Not a chance! Bowyer slithered out of his car like a serpent ready to strike and literally ran across the concrete leaving his totaled car behind, straight to the trailer area in order to join in with his crew and make sure that Jeff Gordon looked as bad as his car when they got through. Oddly enough, what had ESPN most upset, was the fact that Bowyer’s crew chief, when interviewed afterward, said ’S**T’ on television. COME ON! This is NASCAR! The people drinking beer at home on their couch have said much worse during the actual race in their own living room.

 

What was the mature, upstanding speech that Jeff Gordon gave out? “Things just got escalated over the year, and I’d just had it. Clint has run into me numerous times, wrecked me, and he got into me on the back straightaway and pretty much ruined our day. I’ve had it, fed up with it and I got him back.” Yes, that sounds nothing like a child who is seriously bent over his Transformer being buried in the sandbox by his five-year-old arch-enemy. Does it?

 

When all was said and done, it seemed that nobody much cared one iota about the fact that  Kevin Harvick actually went on to win the race, and that Brad Keselowski reclaimed the lead for the chase to the Sprint Cup. In essence, all anyone really could remember or talk about was the battle between grown men – without their cars. At least, while in their cars it looks remotely like a NASCAR race. So…Ding! Ding! The TKO has not been achieved with this one, so all will be looking forward to next Sunday in sunny South Florida when the NASCAR season comes to an end at Homestead Miami Speedway.

 

Upside to all this? Racing fans can now most definitely debate with football fans and boxing fans around the globe that there IS finally something interesting in their sport. Even if that ‘something’ happens to be professionals acting like complete and utter babies.
