The Green Register Salutes The Audubon!

 

As I’ve stated in the past, the Sharon Audubon Center was a place where I used to roam as a child and young adult. The beauty of the great outdoors mixed with the learning center which held events that offered everything from being close to a condor to meeting a wolf – everything about this location was amazing.

 

But the National Audubon Society has, for over a century, been the absolute leading voice when it comes to the world of conservation and ‘going green.’ They stand behind – with their projects, magazine, and tireless workers – the fact that our precious habitats need to be protected and preserved so that the next generation can enjoy it just as much as I did.

 

To give a little background, the Audubon’s first success actually was seen in 1900, when its members urged the United States Congress to pass legislation making interstate trafficking of illegally killed birds and animals a crime (which it absolutely should have been!) They also prohibited the importation of non-native and potentially invasive species. The Congress did what the Audubon suggested and a victory was won for our animals and our natural habitats.

 

However, in 2012, we already know that the issues and challenges facing this nation are far more difficult than they once were. We are talking about serious issues when it comes to climate change, recycling, and – most of all – the fact that the Congress has become focused on rolling back environmental protections at the request of special interest groups and increasing industry.

 

This is not an over exaggeration. Protection of the Arctic National Wildlife Refuge, and holding on to the laws that protect our threatened and endangered species are basically falling apart. Even though the Audubon is pushing their efforts to work well with Congress and environmental groups, they are truly working overtime to bring back and enforce the laws that once preserved our wildlife and habitats completely.

 

When it comes to the Audubon Center in the small town of Sharon, they have been connecting people with nature for over forty years. By enabling the community to appreciate wildlife, they have made a community of individuals who understand and protect their natural world in order to help the mission of the Audubon Center.

 

And we are speaking about all kinds of habitats, including scenic hiking trails, mixed forests, meadows, wetlands, ponds and streams – all of these environments that are necessary for this world to continue. And by serving, saluting, and helping the mission of the National Audubon Society to conserve and restore natural ecosystems, is yet another way our voices can be heard.

 

By focusing on birds, wildlife, and their habitats that will benefit the Earth’s biological diversity and humanity, the National Audubon Society is desperately trying to bring all people on board through education, conservation and environmental research. We need to encourage responsibility and the ‘must’ when it comes to saving our natural lands.

 

One of the largest campaigns of the National Audubon Society is their Climate Change Campaign. Here, there are leading scientists working around the globe to bring the issue of man-made greenhouse gases being made from burning fossil fuels which are causing global warming, to the forefront of peoples’ minds. These effects are already being seen worldwide, and the future consequences are devastating. So what the Audubon is intent on doing is providing to everyone knowledge – educating the world to know that the longer we wait to solve these problems, the harder it will be to save our planet. It is now known that if each one of us took action – whether it be in our homes, our communities, events that increase the nation’s awareness, any one of these things – then there would still be time to stop global warming from going any further.

 

It should be known that global warming is THE environmental challenge of our time. All of these experts believe and have shown that achieving a “60-80% reduction in carbon dioxide emissions by 2050 — with an interim cut of 15-20% by 2020” — is absolutely crucial to avoiding dire consequences when it comes to our world. And not only do lawmakers have to move quickly to adopt mandatory measures that reduce greenhouse gas emissions, but they must also promote energy efficiency and renewable energy legislation!

 

America is skilled, America is also formed by people who have a desire to live in a peaceful, healthy world. They have that entrepreneurial spirit to take this climate crisis head-on and invest in new technologies and solutions to create clean energy – which, by the way, creates JOBS!

 

This can even start at a very young age, considering the fact that there are a great deal of Audubon Society’s all across the nation that are striving to provide the best environmental experiences for the thousands of K-12 students who are a part of each and every home state. These quality and necessary environmental education programs added to these optimal locations, brings wildlife conservation and the preserving of habitats to the forefront of everyone’s mind – and shows the children (which was once this child) how to love, honor and protect their environment.

 

There are even some states that have Audubon schools for teachers to learn and master everything from saving animals to saving the planet. Some sponsor charter schools where kids can learn how to conserve energy and receive the skills they’ll need to get one of those ‘green’ jobs that will grow in number as the years go on. There are even programs that involve Elderhostel, Inc., which are designed for people 55 and older to use the Audubon Center’s beauty and majesty to not only learn, but to have fun with their grandchildren in the great outdoors.
