Common Sense is Needed in Order For Your Business to Evolve

As my grandmother always said: “You can’t keep hemming and hawing about things. Just do it!”

Yes, that sounds like common sense – something all of us should know right off the bat when it comes to our goal or mission in life. Well…businesses need to have that common sense, as well, and a great many of them don’t.

Social Media is not something a business can ‘try’ anymore; not in a world that’s run by computers – and consumers ON computers 24/7 finding products, researching companies, etc. Your company is no longer based on what happens inside the storefront and how good the customer service is that people receive from your salespeople, clerks, etc. Nowadays, electronic customer service is an absolute must. From the websites that a company sets up to the ‘chat rooms’ and blogs that must be monitored in order to know what the consumers are saying about your brand or product at any given moment, not to mention the ability to stop negative publicity in its tracks before it gets out of hand and gives your competitors all the sales – everything has to be constantly watched, and consumers have to get immediate attention from a business in order to see that business grow into a success.

Looking at it from a common sense perspective, building a company is a lot like building a football team (to use an analogy that everyone understands). A company needs their own ‘team’ in order to make sure that everything from their advertising and marketing campaigns are working and bringing in money to having the perfect social media team that monitors any and all data that’s going on in cyberspace.

To setup the right team for your business actually begins with setting the goal and defining the roles for each member of your ‘Social Media Team.’ While some companies decide to work from within where social media is concerned, many others outsource their social media needs to stellar teams like Be First, Inc.

The bottom line is that effective social media is a 4-step process that must be enforced: Listen, Analyze, Act and Optimize. Social media is all about conversations and interactions that expand your brand, monitor the competition and increase the value of your reputation.

A monitoring strategy must be put into place where the power of listening is the first and most important step. It’s almost impossible to keep track of all the relevant conversations and engage in them when it comes to your consumers and your (hopefully loyal) client list.

Over the years, Simplify360 has utilized their  professional experience and monitored and experimented with many brands and agencies to come up with ten well-defined crucial stages of social media monitoring.

First, define your business goals: There is no way to make a brand successful without knowing exactly what you’re aiming to accomplish;

Define KPIs for your business problem: Is there an issue? Is there a problem with the fact that your business is either failing to keep up with social media, or perhaps is getting negative publicity through social media?

Carry out preliminary social media ‘buzz’ research: The Social Media team that you hire must begin immediately to find the initial research and investigate all avenues – Facebook, Twitter, websites, blogs, etc. – to see what people are saying about you.

Identify where you would want to monitor: What areas on the Internet Superhighway do you want to monitor? Is there a specific realm that is industry specific that you and your brand should be a part of? What advertising campaigns and events are already being held regarding your type of product line; and are competitors rivaling your campaigns when you need to become the ‘top dog’ in order to survive? This is where the social media team needs to be 24/7.

Prepare a keyword strategy: Let’s say the word ‘Friday’ appears in your business name or motto. Well…if that’s the case, many forms of data and reports will be handed to you saying how many ‘click through’s’ have happened for your company. Well, this isn’t true. Think about it. There are other corporations – some very large corporations – with that word in their title, so you need to define keywords that are unique and individual to only your business.

Develop an action plan: What do you want to monitor first? What data are you looking for? Should the social media team head toward the advertising realm, or should they first look at customer service and evaluating consumers’ needs? Make sure your action plan is, again, unique to you and your company’s needs.

Setup a team and define roles: Each member of a social media team has their own job to do – and they need to do it well. Although some companies, especially start-ups, want to work on social media themselves, it becomes an impossibility. Therefore, you need a team that has that 24/7 time period available to focus on you and your business, and each person on that team must know exactly what their position is when it comes to being your social media professionals.

Implement the strategy: Once you know what you’re going to do – once you have that plan set in place – it’s time to run with it! Everyone is on board and all systems are go! There is no time to hesitate. Once you know your plan – enforce it.

Review the output of your strategy: When the numbers, data and information begin to come in, extensive and detailed reports need to be achieved so that you know exactly what the industry is all about out there. You need to see everything – positives and negatives – and identify weaknesses in order to make YOUR company name the best in the business.

Scale and Evolve: With every social media plan there is an adjustment period. Why? Because the internet is constantly changing. And there are new ‘sites’ and ‘big things’ popping up every single day. It is no longer just a ‘Facebook Nation,” Twitter proved that. So the plan that you have implemented needs to be scaled back or enhanced in order to make sure that YOUR company is always being looked after in the right way.

This is what it takes to see your business evolve! And this can ONLY be accomplished with the right social media team behind you!
