Rickie Lee Jones & Tyronne Wells Performing at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall

Two new shows have been added to the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall and “Saucer Series” lineup: Rickie Lee Jones will perform on Friday, November 9th, and Tyrone Wells will appear at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall on Sunday, December 9th.
Once touted as the natural successor to Joni Mitchell, singer/songwriter Rickie Lee Jones proved no less idiosyncratic or mercurial; like Mitchell, Jones experienced significant commercial success at the outset of her career, but a restless creative spirit — combined with a stubborn refusal to fit comfortably into any one musical niche — sealed her ultimate destiny as that of a highly regarded cult heroine. Her first measure of success was as a songwriter. In 1978 Jones’ four-song demo came to the attention of Warner Bros. executive Lenny Waronker, who enlisted Russ Titleman to co-produce her self-titled 1979 debut LP. Spurred by the success of the jazz-flavored hit single “Chuck E’s in Love,” Rickie Lee Jones became a smash both commercially and critically, earning praise for Jones’ elastic vocals, vivid wordplay, and unique fusion of folk, jazz, and R&B.

The son of a preacher and the youngest of five children, Tyrone Wells was only allowed to listen to gospel music growing up inSpokane,WA, although he was eventually also exposed to artists like Stevie Wonder and James Taylor. As a teenager he moved toFullerton,CA, to attend college, and soon joined the Christian rock band Skypark as the lead singer. After releasing a few records with the group, including two on Epic, Wells decided to leave Skypark and work on his solo material. He began performing at a localFullerton coffeehouse, McClain’s, on a weekly basis, and soon was selling his self-released albums at these shows. In 2003, after signing to True America, Wells issued Snapshot, and in 2005 Close: Live at McClain’s came out. That same year the singer/songwriter set about on working on his next full-length, Hold On, revisiting songs he had been writing during the past two years. Wells’ big break came in 2006 after performing at the National Association of Campus Activities Convention inBoston, when he was approached by several major labels. Eventually he choseUniversalRepublic, which sent Hold On to stores in early 2007, following it with Remain in 2009.
