Behold the Beauty of St. Simons Island
Behold the Beauty of St. Simons Island
The old saying – spring is in the air – takes on a whole new meaning when you find yourself lucky enough to be walking among the vibrant flowers, staring at the stunning butterflies, and watching the endless flocks of migrating birds, while being a part of the beauty that the Golden Isles of Georgia offers. There is a big reason why this area carries such an enchanting name, and it’s because the Golden Isles are very much like Eden; a Paradise on Earth that, with one just one look in any direction, takes your breath away.
Located in the peaceful marshes that surround St. Simons Island, it is as if the gods and goddesses specifically picked this area so that avid bird watchers would be star struck. People who are thrilled with the beauty and elegance of wildlife – from dolphins to cranes – leave St. Simons Island with a lasting impression. We’re talking about mystery intertwined with peace – not a combination that is often found in this world.
It is well-known that more than 280 species of birds have been regularly spotted here, from Bald Eagles and Roseate Spoonbills to Oystercatchers and Painted Buntings. And
the Island’s endless undisturbed beaches and woodlands are also havens for a number of threatened and endangered species. From early morning birding trips to evening owl prowls, bird-seekers and watchers are in wonder 24/7.
While spending time at a particular location that will never be forgotten – the King and Prince Beach Resort – we set out at least twice a day on several expeditions to view everything from the amazing natural wonder of the Sandhill Cranes nesting, to the migrating ducks that filled the sky. I have to say, to hear about ‘poetry in motion’ is one thing, but to see it is another miracle entirely.
To bring these sights and sounds into your world, there are several ways you can embark on these thrilling expeditions. You can opt to drive in order to view several
different locations around the Island, and then hike along the beaches and marshland. I must say, on these incredible hikes – right before the sun rises or as the sun sets gently into the Atlantic – this is a truly extraordinary site.
You can also enlist the knowledge and expertise of a man by the name of Mike McGowan. His company, Southeast Adventures, is located in the quaint village of St. Simons. With Southeast Adventures you can take an incredible 3-hour kayak tour of the marshes, bringing you up close and personal to the myriad of startling wildlife that’s all
around. Another extremely cool way of traveling through the marshes with Mike is to sit down in his pontoon boat to ride through Little St. Simons Island. It is this particular type of expedition where you watch in awe as the dolphins swim beside you, drawing your attention to their entertaining theatrics. While the dolphins are dancing in the water, the herons and pelicans join in on your port side, posing for that magical shot you’ve been waiting for with your camera always at the ready.
In addition to the thrilling photographs you’ll acquire, Mike’s knowledge of the Island’s history, as well as his in-depth know-how of the brilliant nature that surrounds you, is an added bonus to an already imaginative trip.
Once your day of bird watching and exploration has come to a close, the time to head back to the real gem of the Golden Isles – the King and Prince Beach Resort – arrives. Once there you will head to the Kings Tavern. In that peaceful, romantic ambience you can enjoy a drink, partake of incredible cuisine, and discuss the beauty of the day with your partner or friend. You can even learn about a Hemmingway Daiquiri from Vinny D’Agostino – the most knowledgeable Food and Beverage Directors I have ever had the privilege to meet.
In the end, for the avid pursuer of birds, entertainment, beauty, and the thrill of adventure – the month of April is when you must see St. Simons Island. This is one location that is so steeped in history, and so filled with the beauty of the wild, that it becomes that one place…that one memory that will truly last forever.
Until Next Time, Everybody.
