Supporting the American Red Cross during the Red Cross Month

March is the month for supporting American Red Cross in order to help people in need.

Today, Governor Rick Scott will sign a proclamation designating March as Red Cross Month across the state of Florida, and the American Red Cross is asking people to join in helping those in need.

March is Red Cross Month, first proclaimed in 1943 by President Franklin D. Roosevelt. Since that time, every president, including President Obama, has designated March as Red Cross Month. The American Red Cross is synonymous with helping people, and has been doing so for more than 130 years.

The Red Cross responds to nearly 70,000 disasters a year in this country, providing shelter, food, emotional support and other necessities to those affected. It provides 24-hour support to members of the military, veterans and their families – in war zones, military hospitals and on military installations around the world; collects and distributes more than 40 percent of the nation’s blood supply and trains more than 9 million people in first aid, water safety and other life-saving skills every year.

Across the state of Florida, the Red Cross helped more than 4,000 families with emergency needs following a disaster, assisted nearly 15,000 military families and trained more than a half-million people in lifesaving skills, last year alone.

The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar given to the Red Cross is invested in helping the people the Red Cross services.

The Palm Beaches-Treasure Coast Region has a number of activities planned for Red Cross Month, including:

- “Mad Hatters Luncheon” with the Red Cross South County Angels at the Boca Raton Country Club on March 7 The affair will include lunch, a hat contest, an auction and plenty of fun celebrating over 25 years with our Angels. Tickets are $60.00 per person.

- “Honoring the Hero in All of Us” event at Ruth’s Chris Steak House in Boca Raton from 7 to 10 p.m. on March 22. The evening celebrates the HEROES for the Red Cross fundraising campaign.  Complementary tickets are given to all who reach HERO donation status, or can be purchased for $150.00 per person.

- “HEROES for the American Red Cross” campaign with both teams and individual participants working together to bring awareness to their families, friends and neighbors of the vital humanitarian mission of the Red Cross to help raise the funds that will provide the Red Cross with the vital resources it needs to give shelter, food, clothing, emotional support, or other essential assistance to others who are affected by disasters.

The American Red Cross shelters, feeds and provides emotional support to victims of disasters; supplies nearly half of the nation’s blood; teaches lifesaving skills; provides international humanitarian aid; and supports military members and their families. The Red Cross is a charitable organization — not a government agency — and depends on volunteers and the generosity of the American public to perform its mission.
