Planned Parenthood Activists to Fight the War Declared on Women’s Healthcare in Florida

“Dear Editor,

This week almost 200 Planned Parenthood Activists from across Florida rallied at the Capitol.  Coming from all corners of the state; students, mothers, fathers, and grandparents rallied on the Historic Capitol Steps and met with lawmakers to urge them to prioritize expanding access to affordable, quality healthcare, instead of attacking women’s health and rights.

Florida politicians have declared war on women’s health, from attempts to stop Planned Parenthood from opening new health centers to efforts to stop health insurance coverage for contraception.

Florida Attorney General, Pam Bondi, has threatened to sue the federal government over the contraception benefit in the Affordable Care Act.  As the only woman on the state cabinet she should be looking for ways to expand access to reproductive health care, not take it away!

The attacks don’t stop there, committees in both the Florida House and Senate passed the omnibus anti-choice bill, SB 290/HB 277, bringing it one step closer to being debated on the floor.  The far-reaching legislation would not only restrict access to abortion and birth control services, it would impose new regulations that would prevent nonprofit, reproductive health care providers, like Planned Parenthood, opening health centers in the future.

Whether in the Florida Legislature, State Cabinet, or in the U.S. Capitol, Florida’s elected officials are playing a cruel game of politics at the expense of women’s health. Planned Parenthood will continue to fight the passage of SB 290/HB 277 and any other legislation that endangers women’s health.

Note: 

Senator Jones was the only Republican on the Senate Health Regulation Committee who stood up for women’s health by voting against SB 290!  The Senator is also responsible for allowing students to speak against the bill when other members attempted to deny them the opportunity to be heard.

“It’s unfortunate that the sponsors of anti-abortion laws don’t recognize they could have more impact if they supported sex education programs and birth control.  We should be addressing women’s health issues rather than spending our energy on unnecessary regulation.”
