Usher in 2012 Correctly – Listen, Learn and Read All Ben Harrison Has to Offer!

 

For months now, we have been speaking about the incredible Ben Harrison - who I like to call the ‘jack-of-all-trades.’  This is the man who writes incredible novels, creates magnificently entertaining albums because he’s one of those musicians who actually sings positive, uplifting lyrics instead of: “Paul shot Johnny, Johnny shot Paul.”  (You know what I mean.)  But those two industries are not even enough for this man.  He runs the Harrison Art Gallery in Key West with his uber-talented wife, Helen, and has created humorous dinner shows that involve music, singing and laughter for all who will be lucky enough to see them.

 

Now, however, I have been told that more than a few new creations are in the works – writings that the publishing world should know about right now, considering how well this man’s other books are doing.  The Rooster Who Loved the Violin – that’s one of the titles – is a children’s book that this writer can’t wait to read.  Why?  Because it’s one of those rare oddities when a writer/editor already knows that when she receives the email or package in the mail, she’s about to have a ball!  And, chances are, there won’t be a vampire in sight to bring the story down.  (No offense).

 

I was also lucky enough to be sent the first installment of a serial novel that Ben Harrison is working on titled, Carla Bárbara and the Bird Dogs.  With just one chapter I was pulled into Carla’s world, watching her go from headache and hangover to the thrills and chills of getting up on stage, watching the spotlight appear, and going back into that world she loves so much.  In fact, I can’t wait to read the next ‘chapter’ of Carla’s life.

 

Now, all readers know (or should by now, considering how much I rant and rave about it) that Ben Harrison’s spectacular story of a young man by the name of Charlie Jones, has already been widely accepted and much-talked-about all over the internet.  As a brief recap, Ben Harrison found a way to base Charlie Jones on many of life’s subjects.  This is one of those pieces that can not be ‘chalked up’ as historical fiction.  There is so much more, seeing as that the character has to deal with social, cultural, and family issues during the post-WWII time period.  Set in Corpus Christi, Texas – the state where everything is bigger and better – Charlie Jones offers readers a ‘truth’ that is not given in most books today. (Again, you know what I mean).  This fictional tale is full of wisdom, and the colors and characters are so entertaining because they are complex and real, seeing as that Ben Harrison grew up in this town and watched the world transform after the war had come to an end.

 

As Ben Harrison told our readers: “There’s a lot of freedom there.  I think it’s a good story about growing up, coming of age, and answering the eternal question of what’s important.  And, surprise!  There’s a boat, a musician, and art involved.  When I was eighteen, I worked as a roughneck on an oil rig so there’s an oil man, too.”

 

And I have to say, I still love the fact that Ben Harrison stood in front of Judy Blume (still, to this day, the best YA writer on earth), and spoke to her about how to ‘spice’ up a YA.  Ms. Blume gave him some pointers on writing (something I would kill for) and told him all about how to bring the ‘heat’ to the page.  After all, this woman brought the world out of their seats with her controversial book, Forever, which then went down as being the ‘greatest look’ at teenage love possible.

 

The experience of Charlie Jones can be had at http://amzn.com/B005R1AW2I – and I assure you that once you begin, you will be hooked.  Life through this boy’s eyes is a true gift.  And…seeing as that we’re in the holiday season, it could be the ultimate gift for the avid reader in your life.

 

His nonfiction work is also one that – even with reviewing fifty books or more a month – I just can’t get out of my mind.  I want to say that it’s like Stephen King, as far as your horror factor is concerned, but I can’t.  Because Ben Harrison found a way to take a creepy and odd obsession and turn it into a love story that many fans say they fell for simply because of how much the main character cared and doted on his…muse.  Undying Love (is what this one-of-a-kind true crime/romance/thriller/suspense/horror book is called.  And yes, in a way it does fit into every single one of those genres.  In a nutshell, Undying Love speaks of a “relationship” between a live human and a dead human which I will always believe should find it’s way to the screen.  I don’t think industry people realize that audiences would cheer for this relationship, even if they wanted to go home and bathe immediately after seeing it.

 

Air Sunshine, and Erin Elkins and Ben Harrison, are both CD’s that offer the ‘musical’ side of Ben Harrison to the world.  With a touch of jazz and a tone that will keep your mind engaged for hours, Erin Elkins and Ben Harrison, brings back the country/folk appeal and combines it with an almost haunting, sultry quality that takes you away from what you’re doing and brings you into a world of inspiring verse.  And Air Sunshine?  So entertaining, as it offers those amazing songs of what the world used to be like, and how much simpler it was before we were bombarded with nerve-wracking technology and wall-to-wall bad news.
