Marla Mase: The Goddess on Holiday – Rocking at the Triad!
Readers, last week we ‘sat down and spoke’ about The Goddess, and how Marla Mase is offering the people of New York City a truly entertaining and one-of-a-kind holiday experience that all audience members will see as absolutely ‘making’ their 2011! Unfortunately, for the rest of us around the globe, we will have to sit back and be extremely jealous of those smart people who have made their homes in The Big Apple.
Marla’s CD, A Brief Night Out, is a compilation of songs that come together to form a perfect album (which, as we all know, is virtually impossible). The reviews were all rave, and the myriad of different music styles set to lyrics that were ‘born’ from a play that Marla Mase wrote herself titled, Man/Woman, are unique and unforgettable. And, as we stated last week, a new, stripped down version from this gifted music pioneer is coming to the stage at The Triad Theatre to literally blow everyone’s mind!
On Marla’s own site, in Marla’s own words, she wants all of her fans to know that she is now: “Back to work. It is two weeks away until my show, A Brief Night Out, appears at The Triad Theatre, and it is most definitely ‘crunch time.’”
From rehearsing to promoting, Marla Mase hopes that: “ You all can make it! If you are among the huge number that has seen a version of A Brief Night Out before, this one is pretty different. It’s just me telling my story, straight-up (well, as straight as I can be); and, of course, there’s the band! Have I told you lately how much I love this band?”
Marla Mase is definitely not the only one on that count. As all fans know, the Tomás Doncker Band is made up of Tomás Doncker (guitars, vocals), Booker King (bass), Heather Powell (vocals), Tobias Ralph (drums), and Nick Rolfe (keyboards) – and there has yet to be, or ever will be, a collaboration that is this truly outstanding!
Marla Mase continues on to let everyone know that: “If you’re planning on coming, please make your reservations in advance at, (http://www.brownpapertickets.com/event/206888). The Triad likes to know how many people to anticipate so they can staff appropriately. You don’t have to pay until you get there, and it is cash only – so keep that in mind. Once again, I appreciate your support, I need your support – artists cannot do any of it without YOU!”
As we already know, supporting The Goddess is not exactly a difficult thing to do, seeing as that Marla Mase has proved with everything thus far – from plays to lyrics to her two phenomenal albums, A Brief Night Out and SPEAK – that she is one ‘creator’ that all audiences should be scrambling through the door to witness.
The Triad is touting this show as they should – BIG and BOLD!
Writer and performer Marla Mase is set to deliver a special one-night-only performance of her stunning one-woman rock opera, A Brief Night Out. On Monday, December 12th at The Triad in New York City, Marla Mase will be joined by the Tomás Doncker Band – and the evening will feature direction from the incredibly talented, Sara Berg.
To recap, this amazing rock opera – A Brief Night Out – is the rock-n-roll fairytale of a modern-day, middle-aged woman who apparently has it all: a husband, two kids, a business, friends, and yet she is falling apart. She embarks on an affair with the man of her dreams and discovers a self (for better, or for worse) that has long remained hidden. It’s a mid-life rock-n-roll crisis, with songs like “Exquisite Drops,” “Gaping Hole,” “Lily Pad” and “I’m Done,” from the monumental repertoire of Marla Mase.
For those of you who may have been living in a cement room with no windows and no radio for a while, Marla Mase is a writer/performer/producer/singer/songwriter from New York City who is known far and wide for her gutsy, sexy, raw, performance style and her intelligent lyrics. Her newest project, SPEAK, is a genre-busting rock album with a mix of world beat, spoken word, funk, R&B, punk, and classic rock-n-roll. Yet this description doesn’t seem like it even touches the surface when it comes to this amazingly talented individual. “The Goddess articles” have been coming to you for months and months, showing a tremendous number of sides, talents and skills that Marla Mase seems to have a wealth of – and no one, no performer of the past or present – seems to be able to even get near her when it comes to being the ‘best’ that the music world has to offer.
It has been said by this writer, as well as many others, that all of her amazing abilities, songs, and performances are sectored off as “…It’s very Mase” – meaning eclectic, provocative, theatrical, risky, intense and very sexy. Although Marla Mase has been likened to the great Patti Smith, she is also said to have a certain ‘groove’ that even the legendary poet/songstress didn’t even own. Marla Mase’ live shows – which are a combination of rock-n-roll and the spoken word – are immensely explosive, and they are shows that people continue to talk about long after the curtain has closed.
A Brief Night Out will play at The Triad (158 West 72nd Street) at 7 p.m. on Monday, December 12th. Tickets, priced at $12, can be bought online at www.BrownPaperTickets.com.
A little extra info is that there is also a two-drink minimum at the performance, but listen to this writer when I tell you – drinks are unnecessary. Marla Mase and her incredible performances lift audiences up so high they have to look down to see ‘Heaven.’
And if you can’t wait for that two weeks to get here soon enough, go out and get Marla Mase’s new album – SPEAK – which has been crossing genres, radio stations, minds, and making sure that all people everywhere know that Marla Mase is THE performer, artist and singer that is changing the way rock-and-roll is seen. This is a seriously great Christmas gift for anyone who loves the world of music!
I can go on and on, as I always seem to do when it comes to Marla Mase - but there really is a simple reason why. In a world of farce, fakery, and ridiculousness – where reality shows and ‘commercial’ musicians are bought and paid for – Marla Mase brings back the very real, raw, and brilliant concept of what rock-n-roll is all about!
And even though I literally want to make voodoo dolls of all who get to sit in those seats at The Triad Theatre on December 12th and stick pins in you…I realize that it is all about location. And, once again, New York City is the perfect location! Enjoy!
Until Next Time, Everybody!
