The Naked Foot 5K Kicks off 2012 in St. Augustine, FL

The First-Ever National Barefoot Race Series Returns for a Second Season

The Naked Foot 5K challenges runners to lace up or kick off their shoes and run “naked” or shod, with a dog or pushing a stroller.

“It’s not about the barefoot movement,” said The Naked Foot 5K co-founders, Scott and Lauren Jones. “It’s about the movement movement.”
The 2012 series kicks off at Anastasia State Park in St. Augustine, Florida on Saturday, February 4.

The Naked Foot 5K is not the predictable paved-path 5K. The St. Augustine course will not be unveiled until race day, but runners should expect to run part wooded trail, part sandy beach. Scott and Lauren Jones invite runners to join them in a beach clean-up to protect the beach environment and local marine life on Friday, February 3.

In addition to the 5K, the event includes a morning packed with activities for the entire family: a free kids fun run, all-grass one-mile race, foot massages, Tarahumara barefoot games, live music, healthy-living vendors, prizes and more.

On the day of the event, The Naked Foot 5K will be collecting gently worn footwear and donations for Soles4Souls.

These donations will be shipped to victims of natural disasters or people living in extreme poverty. It is estimated that Americans have 1.5 billion pairs of unused shoes lying in their closets.

“We can use the shoes taking up space in your closet to change the world one pair at a time,” said Wayne Elsy, Founder and CEO of Soles4Souls. “We need our partners across the U.S. to ‘STEP UP’ and get behind our call for action. It’s one of the simplest yet most profound gifts you can make, because it will greatly improve someone’s life in the most difficult of times.”

For details or to register, check out the new Naked Foot 5K website, www.thenakedfoot5k.com. Register by December 25 for a $10 discount and to be entered in a raffle for a free night at La Fiesta Ocean Inn & Suites. Oceanfront on St. Augustine Beach, La Fiesta Ocean Inn & Suites is only a ten-minute drive to Anastasia State Park (race site). The hotel is offering a 20% discount on ocean-side rooms (2 night stay) which includes a hot breakfast delivered to the room to all race participants. About The Naked Foot 5K

Scott and Lauren Jones founded The Naked Foot 5K, the first national barefoot running series, in an effort to create a unique event to make people curious. As “barefoot moderates,” they run about ten percent of their weekly training miles barefoot because they love the feel and the impact it has on their form and strength, but recognize that there is a time and a place for a good pair of shoes. Scott is an exercise physiologist and former collegiate athlete. Lauren earned her degree in exercise science. As a result, they understand the biomechanics of running and how barefoot running can help improve running form and help prevent common running ailments.
