Does anyone care if I live or die?
Well of course they do, but the devil is in the details. I suffer from asthma. I have no healthcare. There are many people who are upset with the idea of national healthcare, and believe it will be the financial death of this country. I have news for you. It’s me (and people like me) who you are killing, or rather who are dying.
People are often concerned with the system abusers. Those people who know the system and milk it for all its worth. Then there are people like me, who may not even know where to go for help, let alone how to use it. I should be in a Dr.’s care, but I have no insurance, and no job besides being an artist. I often don’t get paid for the things I do, because people think art should be donated or free and only legit people should get paid like lawyers, Dr. and skilled labor. It is wrong to think that way, but it is what people in our country do. Our collective and cultural values are… misplaced.
Because of the system abusers, people want to throw the baby out with the bathwater. By the way… I’m the baby.
I do know that my friends care. I know that because I asked for help for inhalers on my facebook, and many people have come to my aid. Thank god for facebook! There were people on there that knew about programs and places to go. But what about people who don’t have a ton of friends, or a computer? How do they find out? To be honest, I don’t know. I am sure that it is different for each region. The answer is different for Denver, Colorado than it is for St. Augustine, FL.
The point of this whole conversation is that even if we don’t know the answers to these questions, we need to find out. In our country people shouldn’t die because they just didn’t know about the resources. Right now, lack of national healthcare is my personal reality. I will look into the options people told me about, but I am one of the lucky ones. The people who live around us are the ones we should take the time to get to know, not just the ones who are “our kind” of people. People are our people, we are all American’s aren’t we? We are all human beings aren’t we? We all want to be thought of as being a good person, right? Then we should all care about who lives or dies, not just if it’s me.
