Social Media, Do you Know How to Sift Through It?

I am not trying to sound simplistic here but at the end of the day it’s still all about putting out content and managing relationships. Putting out content only really matters when there are people interested in reading it. Building a network of followers on any of the platforms takes time. It’s no different than joining a new social club in your own town, or networking group. When you are the new person, it takes time for people to know, like and trust you. People just don’t throw money and contacts at you because it’s you.
Social Media “Experts” per se know how it all works and can tell you how to do it. Most small companies just do not have the resources to grow a decent sized network that’s going to mean anything. What can you do with 100 or even 1000 Twitter followers? Not much. The fact remains that growing a decent sized network takes time and money. Getting advice on how to do it, if you don’t have the resources or are not willing to spend for them is pretty pointless. Building social media networks can be done for a number of reasons; branding, customer feedback, networking, public relations, etc. Any one who claims to be a social media expert or consultant should at the very least be able to come up with a viable strategy for a company. These can vary widely depending on what the enterprise does and who the company caters to.
No one should rely on any type of “consultant” without knowing enough to know whether they are indeed getting good advice and counsel. For many business owners that is not always easy to do. Asking for good references and a track record can really help separate those who bring value to the table from those that are just trying to get into your pocket without delivering any value.
There seems to a trend toward companies that not only know what to do but actually do it. I have found some good companies with large Twitter followings (over 500K) and a good network of sites that get a lot of page views as well as a lot of followers on all the big social sites. They offer a service of what amounts to be outsourced social marketing and blended PR. Because of the size of their network they get a lot more interest than I could possibly get for my clients if they were starting from scratch or trying to manage their own followings by themselves.
At the end of the day it’s about exposure and who can legitimately help you get it. With all that’s going on web-wise, it’s almost impossible to stay on top of it all without some help. The key is finding help that is competent and reliable.
