Chelsea Welch, a junior at Flagler College in historic St. Augustine, has been eating at Hot Shot Bakery since her first College move-in day. Hailing from Pensacola, Florida, she’s been an avid patron at Sherry Stoppelbein’s bakery & café for more than three years, located a half block from the college campus in America’s Oldest City.
An elementary education/exceptional student education major, Chelsea enjoys the warm homey atmosphere in Stoppelbein’s little eatery, where students can gather for pre- or post-class breakfast or lunch served all day. The ‘turkey bacon panini’ is her favorite sandwich but her new acclaim is due to her ability to eat (16) chocolate covered datil peppers in five minutes and be the current champion on the café’s WALL OF FLAME!
“I love hot stuff and I’m very competitive, so I just HAD to do it” exclaims Chelsea. “I know that tourists and locals think that having just one little chocolate covered datil pepper is fiery. After sixteen, I knew I walked away with the current title”.
Stoppelbein’s ‘WALL OF FLAME’ features photos of patrons who are eating their first datil pepper treat or competing to eat the most. After months of wannabe winners, patrons still try to outdo the current champion! But 16 is hard to beat.
For nearly 25 years, Sherry Stoppelbein has been preparing mouth-watering pastries, breads, signature lunch sandwiches, homemade soups, early morning breakfast and Datil Pepper hot sauces for her patrons and fans. At Hot Shot Bakery, breakfast & lunch are served all day, featuring her award-winning Minorcan Datil Pepper Clam Chowder, scrumptious Panini sandwiches, artisan breads, decadent desserts, full-service catering and a line of datil sauces, mustards, salsa and jams. A native of St. Augustine, Sherry began the legend in 1987 with ‘Luvin Oven Catering’; now patrons can relax in the cafe or on the open-air patio. Open Daily 8am-5pm. Closed Monday. Saturday til 8pm.
