Bingo Nights and the Elderly on Apr2 2010

If you like watching any of these old TV serials from the 70s and early 80s, you will probably have seen something happening in all of them. Small communities holding local bingo nights, and that will be a meeting place for the elders of your community. If you were old enough to remember your childhood during these times, or earlier, you will probably remember your own grandpa going out to a bingo night every week; perhaps you had even accompanied him during these fun nights out.

Local bingo nights were a great way to socialize and have fun, especially for the elderly. If you had ever been to one, you would probably fondly remember the fun camaraderie that was always there around the games that were being played. People used to have fun, used to drink, smoke, laugh, talk to each other, play pranks and fun practical jokes, and there was a great deal of bonhomie around the bonfire, so to say. The actual game, or games, of bingo, was just an occasion, an excuse for people to meet up and have fun.

Bingo was a great way to meet up and socialize, especially in rural and suburban areas, and besides Sunday church, that was perhaps the only other weekly occasion when people spent time meeting with local friends. Unfortunately, those days are quickly going away, and local bingo night fun is becoming a dying practice. Nowadays, you will hardly see the same number of bingo nights happening anywhere, and the fun is gone from it.

The main reason for this is, of course, the rapid urbanization of our country. Urban settings are not good for bingo nights where local elders can meet. First, there are other venues for socializing, even if they are not all for the elderly. Secondly, bingo itself is becoming big business, especially online, and people are finding it more interesting to play bingo and make money than to play bingo and meet people.
