A leader in the anti-torture movement and founder of School of the Americas Watch will speak at the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of St. Augustine at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Feb. 18.
Since 1990 Father Roy Bourgeois has fought to shutter the School of the Americas (SOA) at Fort Benning, Ga., where Latin American soldiers learn repressive political methods, including torture.
In El Salvador, SOA alumni were convicted of the assassination of Archbishop Oscar Romero and the rape & murder of four U.S. church women. SOA graduates are implicated in the murder of dozens of labor leaders & massacres of peasants. Similar crimes have been committed by SOA alumni throughout Latin America for more than 60 years. At least 11 Latin American dictators were products of SOA.
The School of the Americas is now called the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security and Cooperation (WHINSEC). In 2007 a bill to end U. S. funding for WHINSEC lost by six votes in the House of Representatives.
Father Roy will describe his boldest, newest strategy — persuading Latin American heads of state to stop sending soldiers to the school. Venezuela, Bolivia, Argentina, Costa Rica & Uruguay have agreed to end their ties with WHINSEC.
Winner of the Gandhi Peace Award and the Pax Christi Teacher of Peace Award, Father Roy has devoted his life to human rights causes. The yearly protests he has organized at Fort Benning have involved hunger strikes, prison time and harsh censure for the priest.
His talk, entitled “The Latin American Project,” is free and all are welcome. Wine and cheese will be served. The event is sponsored by Amnesty International’s St. Augustine local group.
