Why Are You Bald?

I can’t tell you how many people ask me that. They ask often because they are afraid that the answer is because I have cancer. Let me assure you, right now. I am bald by choice. I do NOT have cancer. Now that is out of the way I can tell you my story and you can enjoy it.

I used to have really long dark hair. About six years ago I got into chalk art. I fell in love with the pavement, but it is about ten to twenty degrees hotter on the asphalt than the air just three above it. That first summer was HOT and I nearly had a heat stroke because I couldn’t stay cool. For two weeks I had my hair up in a pony tail because there was no AC in my apartment. For several years I had already been shaving the back of my head under my occipital bone to help keep me cool when I got migraines. So I had a buzzer for my hair.

For two weeks I woke up and threatened to cut it all off. One day I woke up and put my hair in the pony tail and the feeling of my own hair on my back felt disgusting. So I cut the ponytail off. I ran my fingers through my hair. It felt gross. So I cut it more… until I had buzzed my whole head. That is how I became bald.

The reason I have stayed bald is that it is the best thing I ever did! The feeling of wind over those tiny hairs was incredible that first summer! Then when I was waiting in line for places people asked if they could touch my head! I have never had so much free affection in my entire life for my long hair as I ever did for being bald! I have camaraderie with other bald men. I have women who have cancer that thank me for loving myself because it gives them courage to be ok with losing their hair. I don’t spend a ton of money anymore on hair care products. It’s easy for people to tell who I am who have never met me but have seen my facebook pictures. The list goes on and on! When I do want hair I have wigs, and perhaps I will share some of those with you down the road. You couldn’t pay me to go back!

I did a poem called Bald Woman. I will attach the video for your pleasure. Again, I am so glad to be here in St. Augustine! I hope you are enjoying this week of getting to know me articles. Please leave comments as I love to hear from you!

We Are Still…All in This Together!

We Are Still…All in This Together! by Amy Lignor   December 7, 1941. Sunday morning was lovely on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A typical Sunday, in fact, where people were moving calmly and in a relaxed “weekend-mode” stance at the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet Headquarters. Just before the clocks struck 8:00 a.m., however, the country of Japan launched planes from six aircraft carriers in what would be considered the “first wave” of … [Read More its Good for You...]
