When it Comes to Interior Design: “Do-It-For-Me!”

When it Comes to Interior Design: “Do-It-For-Me!”

By Samantha Lewis

The stories are many…standing at the sink you look out at the bright sunshine and wonder why, exactly, the kitchen looks drab, when so much solar power is aimed at your home. The humid summers and the high heat from cooking dulled the paint, made the curtains fade, and suddenly even the blinds  look as if they were carried over on the Mayflower. The room is also beyond hot, even though the air conditioning is running. (Another thought suddenly enters the mind…huge summer electric bills are headed your way.)

Another scenario? Waking up in your bedroom. This is the room in the home offering peace after a long hard-day at work. Although everything is in its proper place, the ambiance is simply not there. The light isn’t shining in, and the drapes look a lot like the blinds in the kitchen – yet another gift from Christopher Columbus.

The flame sparks and suddenly you want nothing more than to hop on the ‘do-it-yourself’ train and turn the house you love into the Faux Wood Blinds_fullhouse you always dreamed about. Heading into the monolithic hardware store you search for color swatches, draperies that will add more lighting, and even tempered colored glass to add an extra touch of elegance. The heart beats faster as you get a look at all the options out there in the home décor universe.

But…it’s a fact that a majority of the population knows absolutely nothing about hanging a curtain correctly; let alone how to make a room shine. Sometimes it’s the frustration that comes from learning about the correct sizes and shapes, and how to hang the window covering at the exact level without throwing the hammer across the room (most likely hitting a window in the process). Sometimes it comes from laziness; you simply don’t want to spend the very few hours of free time you have decorating a kitchen.

However, the perfect choice is there. Spark + Products + Expert = Solution!

Curtains, draperies, blinds – these are not just window coverings anymore. There are some window coverings that are particularly made to help keep out the heat for summertime and better insulate the home, bringing that frightening electric bill down (so you don’t throw yourself through that proverbial window).

Motorized window coverings powered by Somfy® can also be part of your home. Able to control lighting and privacy, these window treatments are cordless, so there are no worries when it comes to children or pets becoming entangled.

To solve issues in that dingy kitchen, there are lines of faux wood blinds and composite shutters available. Neither will crack under the heat produced from stovetops, and are easy to clean (even for the lazy).

In that bedroom, solutions come in the form of soft and airy drapery panels; pairing these subdued colors with honeycomb shades makes the room literally transform from boring to stunning. These products also offer an extra layer of insulation to keep temperatures regulated while you’re asleep, dreaming of how great your house looks. Even the office den can be brought to life with sophisticated hardwood shutters.

The majority of your electric bill comes from heating and cooling, and it certainly doesn’t help if your windows are costing you money. That’s right; you can save money on your air conditioning bill by keeping the intense heat from the sun, outside.  Using energy saving window treatments puts the homeowner’s money where it belongs, back in your pocket.

If eco-minded, there’s a vast line of window coverings that promote a truly healthy environment. There are window coverings made of wood products that are produced using North American hardwoods and are carefully harvested through sustainable yield forest management.

Moisture resistant window coverings made from the finest materials, are also out there. No matter how humid the air is, these coverings retain their beauty. Composite shutters as well as faux wood blinds can even resist high moisture areas, like in a coastal home.

Signature series window films are also a great choice, designed to filter solar heat, reduce furniture fading, and increase safety. The films provide clean, unobstructed views of that sparkling world outside. For a more vibrant choice, decorative window films are also available; turning a plain window into a literal work of art.

Enlightened Style; Lafayette; Hunter Douglas; Faux Iron Solutions – the list of beloved brands is long, and the products to choose from can make someone more than a bit confused.

The right window covering can literally save you money by saving energy. My advice? Save the ‘Do-it-Yourself’ for another project. For the home you love, call up true experts and say: ‘Do-it-for-Me!’

There Are Superheroes Among Us

There Are Superheroes Among Us by Amy Lignor   This story truly proves that a superhero does not require a cape, tights, or the ability to fly. In a world where all headlines seem to be centered around who shot who, who is being put upon, who’s “getting away with it” – all the way to who is getting divorced and who may or may not be kneeling at NFL games – negative stories seem to be the only ones covered anymore by the media. … [Read More its Good for You...]
