Veterans Are Honored, A Pup Steals Hearts & an Icon Returns!

by Amy Lignor

The Super Bowl ads definitely covered a wide spectrum last night. And, thankfully, they were mostly good and mostly memorable. I say, ‘thankfully’ because the actual game was beyond boring. Even the FOX crew looked like they had checked out the second Seattle came out on the field in the second half and scored yet another TD immediately with their special teams unit.

FOX made sure to give themselves a pat on the back by showing the television creations that became hits for them this past year. Sleepy Hollow and a great many other eerie, twisted shows that are beyond cool have given FOX a leg up (and over) some of the Super-Bowl-Commercials-2014other major networks. Although, once the game reached the point of blistering boredom, many watchers actually wanted a Sleepy Hollow episode in order to stay awake and at least get something fun out of the evening.

The car companies went with the oldies but goodies. Faces like Bruce Willis, the cast of Star Trek (not the original, of course), the Matrix gang who helped sell a KIA with an operatic solo, and Jaguar, who stayed with their all-British motif of bad guys starring Ben Kingsley. Bob Dylan was on hand to hock and rock a car, and the Muppets took over the Highlander. In other words, faces loved by generations seemed to be offered up as comfort for the Denver Broncos fans who were shocked beyond belief that their team was, at one time, down 35-0.

Was there humor? Absolutely. One of the greatest commercials of the night, believe it or not, was tongue-in-cheek to the maximum. And a true NFL wannabe star made his presence known. Tim Tebow, the QB who many have picked on over this past year, worked with Verizon and talked about contracts – finding them, losing them, and having Verizon buy them back. The pictures of Tebow on the moon and elsewhere were hysterical, so thumbs-up to him!

One of the greatest things about last night’s advertisements was the honor and respect shown to our soldiers. Veterans were screen-shot-2014-01-30-at-101431-am-1png-8810f256c0e01b9bappreciated and, as always, the stunning Clydesdales of Anheuser-Busch stood out among the pack. That is one team that will always bring respect and honesty to the television set, and are still remembered for their stunning ‘walk and bow’ before the felled Twin Towers.

But Budweiser made sure to offer up more than one ad. THE best commercial of the night, hands down, is also the sweetest ad ever made. In the 4th Quarter of the Super Bowl, when it was definitely over, a Golden Labrador fell head over heels with one of the Clydesdales that the rest of us have fallen head over heels for. “Let Her Go,” by Passenger plays during the commercial as you watch the cute little puppy and the mighty creature form a relationship that actually made it worth watching the game in order to see. The best buds don’t have to leave each other – not when the entire team of Clydesdales surround a car so that the small pup will not be taken away from them. So adorable, so lovely, and it should definitely be the King of YouTube for a good, long time to come.

A few surprises for many would be the new ‘Transformers’ movie coming to screen this year without Shia LaBeouf. Mark Wahlberg seems to be the star of this one. Huh? Has Bumblebee deserted his best friend?

And for those out there who love the combination of humor and intelligence, Emmy (and Grammy) award-winner this year, Stephen Colbert, gave you a double-shot of greatness. He was kind enough to sell pistachios to the rest of us. He in his neon green tie with his American Eagle sitting beside him in a matching suit and tie, commanded the screen.

But what exactly made people yell and scream the most? What did FOX air that made the heart palpitate and made every woman and man in the country hold their breath and wait for the announcement?

In total silence the familiar ‘24’ logo lit up in gold as Jack Bauer quietly walked toward the screen with a battered and bruised victim he rescued on his arm, passing the British flag, fires, bombs, and destruction…alerting viewers to the fact that in May (and that can NOT come too soon), the mighty show returns to FOX leading into a movie this Fall that will blow everyone’s socks off!

So, a huge trophy goes to the Clydesdales; you are the best, as always. And a huge thank you goes to FOX. Although the Super Bowl was boring it was all worth it to know that…JACK IS BACK!

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
