Utah Doubles Down on Land Grab

Gov Mansion Protest

As the 2013 Utah legislative session winds down to a close, one thing is abundantly clear — Utah Governor Gary Herbert and his allies in the state capitol are digging in for a protracted fight to gain state control of public lands in Utah.

Help SUWA stop Governor Herbert’s land grab.

Last year, Governor Herbert signed into law the “Transfer of Public Lands Act” — a law that demands the federal government hand over more than 30 million acres of federal land to Utah by the end of 2014.

And this year, Governor Herbert is likely to sign a number of bills that seek to further weaken federal authority over public lands — paving the way for the state of Utah to gain control over Utah’s wild lands so it can open them up for oil and gas drilling and sell them to eager speculators.

If the state were to gain control of Utah’s public lands, the consequences for Utah’s redrock wilderness would be dire. That’s why we need to make sure we are there to fight them at every step.

Could you make a contribution today, to give SUWA the resources we need to stop Herbert’s ill-conceived and dangerous land grab?

Yes! I want to join the fight to protect Utah wilderness.

The point of the anti-federal bills (likely to be passed by the Utah legislature and signed by Governor Herbert) is to impede the federal government’s ability to manage Utah’s public lands for the benefit of all Americans. One bill would prevent BLM and Forest Service rangers from enforcing the law without the local sheriff’s permission. Another would disrupt the BLM’s attempts to manage grazing in the Grand Staircase-Escalante National Monument. And a third bill — HB 142 — requires the state to set up a process for taking title to the land and to detail ways to increase revenue from it (no doubt through increased drilling).

While the constitutionality of many of these bills is doubtful, there’s no question that those of us who love Utah wilderness need to stand against the legislature’s wave of anti-federal bills. Please make a contribution to SUWA today and help us turn the tide against Governor Herbert’s land grab.

Thank you for standing with us in the fight to protect Utah’s incredible wilderness lands.
