The ‘Green’ World Delves into Animal Bias

The ‘Green’ World Delves into Animal Bias

By Samantha Lewis

All headlines are packed with the horror and destruction that prejudice and violence are bringing about in the United States. People hurting people based on religion or skin color – issues that should have gone out of this country many, many decades ago. But there is also a mindset, pit bull, Breed Specific Legislation, BSL, Obama, United States government, petitions, dog-fighting, feargreat prejudice happening in the animal world – a bias that millions are trying to stop and are barely making headway with their work.

Look throughout history at dog breeds. Every decade has a “most hated” breed; a breed that people have put a stamp on as being the most vicious, horrible and dangerous, leading the rest of the population to want them put to sleep immediately. One of the most beloved breeds in 2015 – the German shepherd – was once seen as the worst and most dangerous, with many cities not even allowing a family to own one within their limits. Now, of course, the pit bull has taken all the headlines for the past five years and longer. They are seen as the ultimate attack dog, with people believing that no pit bull can be part of a family because they will always being about violence. Is this a truth? Simply put: No. So where is this mindset coming from? The horrific people in this world who breed the species just so they can make money by fighting them. The pit bull is one of the most abused creatures on Earth, with sick human beings making them dangerous.

In comes BSL. BSL stands for “Breed Specific Legislation,” and can encompass everything from requiring a special license to breed or house certain species of dogs; to addressing the ridiculous mindset of total elimination of a breed. Some jurisdictions, as stated above, have tried to enact BSL’s because of a growing number of incidents involving pit bulls being used in dog fighting, causing even the U.S. Army and Marines to take administrative action and stand behind the dog.

According to the President of the U.S., he was sent a petition asking him to take a stand on this issue. After looking at it, Obama and the United States government put on record (at least one thing they agreed on) that they are completely and officially against BSL, and believe that no breed (pit bull or otherwise) should be exterminated because of a ‘belief.’ If you think real closely, this frame of mind was used on humans, remember? The complete extermination of souls? It wasn’t right then; it’s not right now. Back-up for their opposition against killing comes from the Centers for Disease Control which stated quite unequivocally that: “dogs of any and all breeds can become dangerous.” Danger is not limited to one breed of dog – a pit bull is not the enemy – and an entire breed cannot be banned or exterminated just because there are those within the breed that can attack.

Pit bulls are the main animals feeling the heat of these petitions, however, a breed that was actually begun in the U.K. by breeding bulldogs and terriers together to be used in blood sports, such as bull- and/or bear-baiting, and cock fighting. These human mistakes, these horrific so-called sports, were completely banned in 1835, when animal welfare laws came to pass. However, the 21st-century has seen a huge rebirth of dog-fighting and blood sports, using the male pits and basically throwing the female pups by the side of the road because they are deemed unnecessary.

Even certain supposed “human societies” and “no-kill shelters” bend the laws for pit bulls, putting many into quarantine or straight to sleep even if they have shown no danger or viciousness whatsoever. They are put to sleep because of the “belief” that they will be evil eventually.

Fact: Pit bulls fill the role of companion dogs, police dogs, and therapy dogs perfectly. Fact: It is not the animal’s fault that they are the majority being used for illegal dog fighting in America, as well as for guarding illegal operations to be used against police. There are horror stories regarding these poor animals, and everyone from Army veterans to owners have stood up in court for their pit bulls and won their cases to save their beloved pets.

It comes down to this: if a pit bull is living in the house next door and is outside within his gate, he is the same as any other dog – from miniature poodle to Belgian shepherd to Chihuahua. You never go up to a fence and try to pet an animal that’s protecting its own home and family. And you should never harm the animal simply because you “believe” they may someday be mean. No offense, but your human neighbor is more likely to grow mean far before their dog will.

If you don’t believe me…just read the headlines. It’s time to discard bias (it was time a long time ago) – against both humans and animals. If this is not done, America will become a society no better than the one who once screamed ‘Heil!’ at a madman.
