The Giant Panda Experiences a New Awakening

When speaking about ‘critical’ species, the definition is not only a species that’s in danger of extinction, but it also encompasses the fact that these species are necessary to the world.

Good news came about this weekend for the Giant Panda. Which, although truly loved around the globe, this is a species that has grown extremely small over the years.

When it comes to China, the panda has become isolated and its habitats are being broken down. Even the government has been Giant_panda_at_Vienna_Zoo_(cropped)working consistently to create reserves for the panda, but poaching continues and habitats are still being destroyed.

But a ray of sunlight appeared in the darkness this weekend, when fourteen brand new pandas were displayed to the world. These artificially bred cubs (nurtured by China’s Chengdu Research Base for Giant Panda Breeding) were happy and healthy as they romped and played for everyone to see.

Although there are many who do not like the artificial breeding process, it is a fact that actual extinction of a creature usually takes millions of years; yet the speed at which critical species are disappearing in our world has become ridiculous. There are some experts that estimate the rate of extinction to be 1,000 times higher in our age.

It is important to remember that the Giant Panda is under threat to be wiped off the face of the earth forever, even though it’s one of the most loved creatures in the world.

Pandas can be found in the amazingly beautiful forests of the Yangtze Basin, and they also play a much-needed role in these bamboo forests. Without the panda roaming these areas, the spreading of seeds and greater growth of the actual vegetation and habitat will cease, killing yet another habitat that this globe needs.

Millions of humans are in direct contact with these habitats in China, so the work of the government and this research facility – as well as the WWF and others – is essential to make the habitats more sustainable and help not only the panda, but also increase the human population’s quality of life. And one of the biggest industries that China relies on for their own economic wealth is ecotourism, which increases because the Giant Panda is a sight people wish to see and a very important personal idol for the Chinese.

In other words, it was a great joy to see the new pandas arrive in this world. Cute, lovable – and necessary – this creature is a staple that needs to continue.

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy
