The Foundation of Social Media Must be Understood
~by James Moore
In every industry, a person must get down to the brass tacks in order to begin. No organization, shop, manufacturer, etc., ever just began one day at the top. Every moment was about work, 24/7 customer service, and working with all types of technology and people in order to claim a target audience and expand.
One of the most needed and important factors for this expansion, as well as the most expensive, comes in the form of marketing and advertising. What used to be PR ‘stores’ with men in suits, idea meetings with posters, people talking, and…scotch, has now become the Internet. But even though the technology changed, the expense is still the ultimate fear for any new business owner.
For many small businesses, expensive advertising campaigns are not even in the sphere of what they can afford. The challenge of the 1950s and before is still just as big in 2014; however, the PR guys with the suits and ties, have disappeared. Instead, for small businesses, a team has been compiled that understands all the ins-and-outs of technology, the way to best market on the Internet, what networks to use and how, exactly, to get that target audience on board without the owner having to sell house, car or any other personal item in order to pay for it.
Getting the most for your money is what the social media/PR team brings to the table. Social media is the door that opens on a world of customers; it offers the small business a real chance at meeting and greeting millions without spending the same. When used strategically by a social media/PR team that knows their business, social media offers that direct engagement, so small businesses finally DO have a way to market and market big – even splashy, when you consider the work a social media team can do on a website alone to build a brand.
People speak about new applications, the mobile world, the networks coming on strong that help with cell and email campaigns – there are a list, and it grows every week, of the newest, hottest, fastest apps around the globe. But the brass tacks of the situation is this: Instead of going crazy trying to figure out all these new challenges, find the social media/PR team that has done it for you. They also know that members of that target audience you need to survive in the industry can most definitely still be found in the almost 250 million active users on Twitter every month and the 1.2 billion users on Facebook.
These are vast numbers, huge figures that seem almost impossible to comprehend, let alone reach with your message. But having that social media/PR team on your side makes these numbers useable and understandable. If the team you hire is right, they can take your company just starting out and use these vast channels to bring about awareness, get that brand name started, offer websites and content that people want to read more about, and create a solid relationship between you and your future customers that will last forever and increase ROI dramatically.
Opening a new business is frightening, even if you are becoming a franchisee of a company already doing well. Which is why the new business owner has to take into account the endless possibilities presented by social media channels that will support the business. Without social media, the business strategy to drive revenue is just not going to work.
Communication is key. This is yet another brass tacks fact, and using social media for communication cuts out serious costs. The business owner can always have peace of mind knowing that the social media/PR team is watching their company 24/7. They are making sure the campaigns are doing well, they are checking in with your competition, and they are basically being the watchdog that your small business needs in order to grow.
These are simple facts. So before you grab the aspirin and find yourself feeling suffocated under the grand list of apps, networks, and sources social media provides – simply remember that social media can be ‘simple stupid.’ And that occurs the minute you take a deep breath and bring the social media/PR masters on board. Then watch the revenue flow!
