The Biggest Loser Fitness Contest Comes to Jacksonville

Local News Station Teams Up With Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym to Promote Healthy Living and Significantly Reduce Adult and Childhood Obesity in the Jacksonville Area

Jacksonville, FL – Obesity has become a problem on the First Coast and brings along with it a multitude of health related issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. In January of 2009, Jacksonville was listed as #8 on the list of the Fattest Cities in America as ranked by Men’s Fitness Magazine. One local news station and Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym have partnered together to bring The Biggest Loser fitness contest to the First Coast in the hopes removing Jacksonville from the List of Fattest Cities. Their goal is to move Jacksonville into the Top Ten Healthiest Cities by 2015 by changing the lifestyles of First Coast residents and encouraging adults and children to engage in exercise and diet programs. The long term goal is to permanently reduce the levels of Obesity, Diabetes, and other related health issues on the First Coast.

The First Coast “Biggest Loser” Contest will consist of 12 adults from the Jacksonville area. Six men and six women will be carefully selected and followed during their 12 week weight loss program modeled after the successful television program. The contestants must follow The Biggest Loser diet plan, plus work closely with a personal trainer provided by Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym and a dietician from Memorial Hospital, who will monitor their progress. Each week their stories will be aired during local news casts and viewers will be able to go online to vote for their favorite contestant.

In addition, Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym will be offering the same diet and exercise program modeled after The Biggest Loser program and contest at each of their 13 locations. Through this well organized outreach program, the hope is to reduce obesity levels on the First Coast and help adults and children become more active, lose weight, and improve their overall health.

First Coast residents interested in taking part in the contest can register at www.firstcoastnews.com/feature/biggestloser

Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym has thirteen area locations – eleven throughout the greater Jacksonville area, one in Gainesville, and one in Brunswick, Georgia. Bailey’s has been a leader in Northeast Florida’s fitness industry since 1981. Bailey’s locations house the widest variety of cardiovascular and resistance training equipment in the area, as well as a range of fitness programs and services.

The Season Begins

The Season Begins by Amy Lignor   Yes, it’s finally time to get down to some real business when it comes to the world of sports. (No offense to Serena at the U.S. Open, but her constant winning is not exactly new.) All this rain across the country has assured that lawns will be overgrown come Monday morning, unless citizens decide to use Saturday to mow. Why is that? Because football is back and Sundays are no longer “nothing to … [Read More its Good for You...]

And the location of many, oddly enough, happen to be in the Southwest. It used to be that a nice white sandy beach was the one place we yearned to go on vacation to get away from it all. Now, however, people are searching for places to travel where legends still exist, and … [Read More its Good for You...]
