Local News Station Teams Up With Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym to Promote Healthy Living and Significantly Reduce Adult and Childhood Obesity in the Jacksonville Area
Jacksonville, FL – Obesity has become a problem on the First Coast and brings along with it a multitude of health related issues such as type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, hypertension and stroke, and certain forms of cancer. In January of 2009, Jacksonville was listed as #8 on the list of the Fattest Cities in America as ranked by Men’s Fitness Magazine. One local news station and Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym have partnered together to bring The Biggest Loser fitness contest to the First Coast in the hopes removing Jacksonville from the List of Fattest Cities. Their goal is to move Jacksonville into the Top Ten Healthiest Cities by 2015 by changing the lifestyles of First Coast residents and encouraging adults and children to engage in exercise and diet programs. The long term goal is to permanently reduce the levels of Obesity, Diabetes, and other related health issues on the First Coast.
The First Coast “Biggest Loser” Contest will consist of 12 adults from the Jacksonville area. Six men and six women will be carefully selected and followed during their 12 week weight loss program modeled after the successful television program. The contestants must follow The Biggest Loser diet plan, plus work closely with a personal trainer provided by Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym and a dietician from Memorial Hospital, who will monitor their progress. Each week their stories will be aired during local news casts and viewers will be able to go online to vote for their favorite contestant.
In addition, Bailey’s Powerhouse Gym will be offering the same diet and exercise program modeled after The Biggest Loser program and contest at each of their 13 locations. Through this well organized outreach program, the hope is to reduce obesity levels on the First Coast and help adults and children become more active, lose weight, and improve their overall health.
