St. Johns County Public Library System
to Make Peace Pole for Center of Human Peace Sign
St. Johns County, FL. – St. Johns County residents can help build a peace pole to be presented at Peace in the Park, a family-friendly day of special activities and celebrations starting at
10 a.m. on September 21 at Al Wilke Field, Main Street in downtown Hastings, across the street from the Hastings Branch Library.
As part of the St. Johns County Library System’s (SJCLS) participation in International Peace Day, librarians will be giving out ribbons at each branch location between now and September 19 for people of all ages to transcribe their wishes of peace. The ribbons will then be collected and attached to the peace pole, which will be placed in the center of a giant human peace sign being formed at 1 p.m. and then photographed from the air. Prior to the human sign’s formation, the SJCLS will read the book, “Stone Soup,” while a huge pot of Peace Soup is prepared. Additional activities are scattered throughout the day including music, face painting, and games for children.
Planned by three local non-profit groups, Pie in the Sky, the St. Augustine Initiative for Compassion, and Unity & Peace St. Augustine, the event will take place during the International Day of Peace, which was established in 1981 by the United Nations General Assembly. For more information about the SJCLS activities for this project or other activities, please call any St. Johns County branch library or visit www.sjcpl.org.
