Miss California U.S. to Discuss Benefits of Serving as a Foster Parent

Miss California United States to Discuss Benefits of Serving as a Foster Parent at St. Johns County Foster Care Training Orientation

St. Johns County, FL. – St. Johns County is pleased to welcome Christina Meredith, 2013 Miss California United States, as a special guest speaker during the 6:30 p.m., April 7 Foster Care Pre-service Training Orientation, 1955 U.S. 1 S., St. Augustine. A St. Augustine native, Ms. Meredith experienced the local foster care system first-hand and will share her personal journey from growing up as a foster child to thriving as a successful advocate and leader in the non-profit, child welfare arena.

St. Johns County residents who want to help local children and families by becoming a foster parent, adopt a special needs youth or teen, or help in other ways are encouraged to attend the April 7 Foster Care Orientation session and Pre-service Training classes hosted by the St. Johns County Family Integrity Program. Classes will be held on consecutive Monday nights from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. beginning April 21 at the Health and Human Services building, 1955 US 1 South. Residents interested in attending the orientation session or the classes are encouraged to contact Joy Meyerpeter at904.209.6131 or jmeyerpeter@sjcfl.us for more information.

As one of eight children in a family that battled the challenges of child abuse and neglect, Ms. Meredith lived with numerous relatives until eventually being placed in St. Johns County Foster Care where she remained until age 18. Lacking traditional family support and with minimal resources at her disposal, Ms. Meredith overcame homelessness and made her way to California where a fresh start and deep appreciation for her misfortunes led her to pursue work aimed at helping young girls and women address similar life challenges.

Today, Ms. Meredith is proud to support the St. Johns County Foster Care Program by promoting and strengthening child welfare initiatives aimed at recruiting quality foster homes and ensuring support for youth who “age out” of care. Ms. Meredith is also scheduled to address the St. Johns County Board of County Commissioners at 9 a.m. on April 1 at the St. Johns County Administration building, 500 San Sebastian View. In addition, she is hosting a fundraiser benefitting foster youth awareness at 5:30 p.m. at Table 1 Restaurant, 330 A1A N., Ponte Vedra Beach. Tickets are available for $25 prior to the event at Tavern on First, 401 North 1st Street. For more information, please visit www.facebook.com/christinameredithfans.

There Are Superheroes Among Us

There Are Superheroes Among Us by Amy Lignor   This story truly proves that a superhero does not require a cape, tights, or the ability to fly. In a world where all headlines seem to be centered around who shot who, who is being put upon, who’s “getting away with it” – all the way to who is getting divorced and who may or may not be kneeling at NFL games – negative stories seem to be the only ones covered anymore by the media. … [Read More its Good for You...]

Now, however, people are searching for places to travel where legends still exist, and … [Read More its Good for You...]
