Facing Tight Budgets, St. Augustine Area Teachers Raise More than $5,000 to Fund Classroom Projects
St. Augustine teacher receives funds for hands-on science learning tools
ST. AUGUSTINE – Nov. 8, 2011 — Shea Grammer, a teacher at John A. Crookshank Elementary School, received funding from DonorsChoose.org for an “Exploring Science” project that provides hands-on tools such as magnifiers and bucket balances for the study of science lessons. “My students have a chance to work with hands-on projects that pertain to our science lessons,” Grammer said. “I know they will soon grow to love science.”
Local Horace Mann agent Shannon Millican has been telling teachers looking for a way to fund classroom projects about DonorsChoose.org, a nonprofit organization that connects donors with public school teachers who need classroom materials. Horace Mann has contributed $600,000 to school projects nationwide through DonorsChoose.org so far in 2011. Now, teachers can submit classroom projects via Horace Mann’s Classroom Project Facebook page to increase their chances of funding.
Grammer demonstrated her classroom project and discussed how other public school teachers can find funding on Nov. 8 at the school. Millican explained the DonorsChoose.org program and Horace Mann’s association with it.
Grammer is among 11 St. Augustine area teachers who have received donations totaling more than $5,000 to fund 15 classroom projects through DonorsChoose.
The teachers gained the donations by posting classroom projects needing funding on the DonorsChoose.org Web site. Full-time public school teachers, nurses, and guidance counselor can participate.
