Social Media Caters to the Power of Youth!

 

Here’s a short quiz: What do Clinton’s election (both first and second), Bieber’s global success, and American Idol finalists have in common? Youth! Let me explain…social media, as we all know, has become THE only way of speaking and meeting with people, making new “friends,” discussing the latest in books, movies, gadgets – and this entire social media movement is literally at the hands of America’s youth.

 

Marketing strategies have come to a grinding halt when speaking about magazines, newsletters, direct mail campaigns, etc.. Marketing and advertising in order to get YOUR brand out there to the masses in order to make a name for yourself and your company and increase sales, has all come down to the World Wide Web, and the largest percentage of its users – ages 13-28 years of age. This is the ‘in’ group. This is THE group that knows what all those codes from LOL to BRB mean – and they are the ones who can make you and your company a roaring success…or an utter failure.

 

I am not joking with the quiz up above. Think abut it. Bill Clinton came into the race and literally made sure to appear on things like MTV playing the saxophone. He actually made a point to reach out to the youth of America knowing that those over eighteen could most definitely secure him a presidency. What happened? He was right…twice.  And, not to get political, apparently the youth was right – considering we had jobs and a working economy back then.

 

Now take Justin Bieber… Was there social media utilized for his blast into the stratosphere of fame, or is he simply ‘cute.’ Nope. There are billions of people out there vying for a singing career (probably most of them are cute) but this is one kid who used the benefits of social media – from YouTube to Facebook to Twitter – in order to spread around videos and get the youth of America to recognize him. Once recognized, it was a sure shot to fame!

 

The latest, hippest products and companies – from Smartphones to HALO and other can’t miss videogames to Playstations 1 through (what is it now? Seventy-five?) – all of these major corporations have learned that the younger generation is not only completely learned and skilled when it comes to social media – but their networking and blogs are what bring in the ‘bucks’ when it comes to their new products. Even when you’re talking about products for older or elderly people. Why is that? I can’t tell you how many times my own mother has asked my daughter to ‘show her’ things on the internet in the healthcare industry and various other categories that are there for her niche group. Being twenty, my daughter can whiz in and out of screens in seconds – with the same ease that Top Gun pilots can turn and twist in the air. So even though the company and/or product that her grandmother is searching for more information on is made for her generation, it doesn’t matter. The social media and marketing strategy still works because the ‘younger generation’ is literally ‘teaching’ the older generation how to ‘surf’ and discover what they need to know.

 

Utilizing social networks in essence means having access to more potential customers. And when you have access to these customers on a daily basis you can establish good relationships with each and every one of them using blogs, networks, websites, advertising and more. You are literally ‘giving the crowd what they want’ and garnering success.

 

Right now companies and businesspeople can go on the web and look at all the different tests and results that the world has done proving that people are spending several hours a day using social media. Seeing as that this is the case, YOU definitely need a visible presence for your company out there in order to infiltrate the buyers and start building relationships with them. Finding out your target audience is one thing, but then contacting and conversing with them on a daily basis is another ‘must do!’

 

It is well-known that having an enticing, vibrant and knowledgeable social media profile will bring potential clients to your online ‘store’ quite rapidly. There they will not only see your products but they will also see the discounts, franchise locations, information and news on upcoming events, etc. They will then take that information and spread the word to everyone they know. Your profile is the ideal spot to create things like coupons that new customers can print out, as well as a place to run special offers available to ‘friends’ on other sites – such as a special discount to all your followers on Facebook.

 

When it comes to articles, every company should know ahead of time that with social media they will be catering to users that ARE younger and – in essence – get bored more quickly. What this means is that when articles, blogs, etc. are run, finding a way to offer all the information you want known in a condensed version is the way to go in order to keep your clients intrigued and coming back! Also, when thinking about posts, be as creative as possible. How about ‘how-to’ articles on something entertaining that your clients can ‘tag’ their friends about? Or, really cool and up-to-date reviews of a product that offers ‘freshness’ to the industry that will have users thrilled with the uniqueness? Or, even a video that is perhaps so good it will end up going viral? These are the things to think about and then implement!

 

Even though this sounds like a bit of a rough job, and even if you are sitting in a boardroom shaking your head and wishing that the Pony Express could be reinstated, the world of social media and the ability to market to the youth of today are MUSTS! There are research tools that your marketing/advertising people will know about in today’s world; things like Tweepi are great tools in researching the perfect niche market for your industry, and you’ll be able to locate lists of clientele that are perfect for your business to cater to. You can also include your company into various groups for more exposure. In the end, social media IS the way to increase your business and put money in your pocket. Yes, there are hours that will be dedicated to learning all about things such as hashtags, keywords and unfamiliar terms that come along when dealing with marketing on programs like Facebook and Twitter. But this is the realm of the 21st century and it is ALL about who you meet, how you meet them, and how you grow your business in your niche market.

 

This is the youth of today! Accumulate the knowledge and you will be assured of success!
