St. Johns County Fire Rescue and the Putnam County Fire Department responded to a reported industrial fire at a potato processing plant in the 300 blk of East St. Johns Ave at approximately 3:15 am Saturday. Upon arrival on scene crews found multiple warehouse type structures heavily involved in fire. Firefighters confirmed that the structure was unoccupied and did not have hazardous materials stored inside then began extinguishing operations.
3 Engines, 3 Tankers, 1 Heavy Rescue, 1 Ladder, 1 Rescue and 2 Battalion Chiefs responded to the scene and fought the fire for approximately 4 hours at the complex. Due to the construction type of the warehouses and the extent of fire involvement, several of the buildings collapsed during the firefighting efforts.
At approximately 8:15 Saturday morning the fire was called under control, but due to the size and extent of fire on the site crews will remain on scene for several hours completing salvage, overhaul and mop up operations.
There were no injuries reported during this incident, and the cause of the fire will be under investigation by SJCFR and the State Fire Marshals Office.
