Second Annual Interfaith Earth Day Celebration This Saturday

COMMUNITY EARTH DAY CELEBRATION

This Saturday, April 24th, Temple Bet Yam will be hosting the Second Annual Interfaith Earth Day Celebration. The celebration is aimed at increasing interreligious dialogue in the community and will also be highlighting the community garden project known as the Flagler College Hunger Initiative, whose goal is to raise awareness about a number of social justice issues like hunger and homelessness, as well as the importance of community supported agriculture. This year, the Saint Augustine community is taking it one step further—combining both elements of faith and works in an effort to care for Saint Augustine’s families that are in need.

Many of Saint Augustine’s most distinguished individuals will be present to speak so don’t miss out on this wonderful celebration of life! Join us at 2 o’ clock at Temple Bet Yam at 2055 Wildwood Drive to be a part of this historic moment.

The Flagler College Hunger Initiative is a collective effort involving Flagler College and members of the community who wish to help provide food for those in need. The goal of the FCHI is to create several small garden plots that will grow a variety of vegetables, fruits, and medicinal herbs that will be donated to those in the community that are in need. In addition to providing those in need with some nutritious vegetables, this program raises community awareness about many different social justice issues –through the medium of interreligious dialogue.

As of now the FCHI has three active participants, including Flagler College, the Mission Nombre De Dios, and Temple Bet Yam. Each of these locations has donated a plot of land that will be used to grow a selection of crops that will be harvested and donated to those in need on a semi annual basis. The efforts being put forth by these organizations are a testament to their dedication to caring for the community. FCHI is honored to be apart of the interreligious dialogue take place that will further strengthen our community.

Last year, Flagler College student Charles Riffenburg, 24, was elected First Chair of the Student Government’s Green Committee. Reflecting on the experience, Riffenburg commented: “I didn’t know exactly what would happen with Green Committee, but I knew I wanted to contribute to the community garden effort”. It was last spring when Riffenburg, a student of Philosophy and Religion at Flagler, met Rabbi Mark Goldman of Temple Bet Yam. Goldman was teaching an introductory course on Judaism at Flagler when he first taught Riffenburg the Hebrew concept of Tikkun Olam, ‘to heal the world’. Riffenburg immediately fell in love with the concept, stating “Tikkun Olam very easily sums up my entire life’s philosophy. It is the duty of every human being to participate in the healing of the world and its people”. Tikkun Olam was Riffenburg’s original inspiration for the creation of the Flagler College Hunger Initiative.

The Season Begins

The Season Begins by Amy Lignor   Yes, it’s finally time to get down to some real business when it comes to the world of sports. (No offense to Serena at the U.S. Open, but her constant winning is not exactly new.) All this rain across the country has assured that lawns will be overgrown come Monday morning, unless citizens decide to use Saturday to mow. Why is that? Because football is back and Sundays are no longer “nothing to … [Read More its Good for You...]

Vacation Time Has Turned “Spooky”

Vacation Time Has Turned “Spooky” by Amy Lignor   Myths and legends, both spooky and surreal, are becoming the subject of many books and newspaper articles lately. And the location of many, oddly enough, happen to be in the Southwest. It used to be that a nice white sandy beach was the one place we yearned to go on vacation to get away from it all. Now, however, people are searching for places to travel where legends still exist, and … [Read More its Good for You...]

Doing Our Part

Doing Our Part by Amy Lignor   There are books being published as of late – wonderful books telling the stories of amazing wildlife rescues, as well as neighborhoods and communities across the U.S. that have taken on projects to save the wildlife in their own surrounding areas.   We always talk about these “success stories,” yet never actually give information on exactly how these “problems” turned into “victories.” … [Read More its Good for You...]
