Remembering Wicca on First Anniversary of Killing in Montreal

Denise-Carey Costa remembers the reckless killing of Wicca in Montreal, Canada, last year and how the tragedy led to the Wiccadetermination to help helpless dogs who face life-threatening situations.

The summer of 2012 was a horrific time for Pit Bulls and owners of Pit bulls. Between June and July three peaceful companion animals from different parts of the world were put to death based on allegations of aggression.

June 18th 2012 saw the death of Tony in Clifton, Arizona, followed by the murder of Lennox in Belfast, Ireland on July 11, 2012 and then the killing of Wicca in Montreal, Quebec on July 26th, 2012.
It was a result of breed specific prejudice and hysteria and judges ignoring the voice of the populace that led to the untimely death of all three dogs. Their irresponsible acts have left families heartbroken and lives shattered.

Chris Papakostas of Montreal, Quebec reflects back on the year since his beloved dog Wicca was murdered by City of Montreal on July 26th, 2012 based on allegations she had bitten a female passerby on the streets of Montreal in June of 2012.

It has been an uphill battle for him since that unfortunate incident. Not only was he forced to surrender his beloved companion dog but also had to stand by helplessly as she was put to death. There was no real evidence that Wicca caused serious injury to the female who never even went to a hospital for any type of treatment. His requests for a dog behaviorist to evaluate Wicca and determine if she was indeed aggressive were also denied. Although many fought for Wicca worldwide, it fell on deaf ears and an innocent, harmless dog was executed for no reason.

Now Chris and his attorney Elaine Rosenberg are once again in the court house fighting against the fees imposed on Chris for impounding his dog and killing her. Chris had his hearing in May. According to Chris the courts were surprised to see him show up with his lawyer. They became flustered and asked for the case to be postponed. Chris is willing to stand and fight them no matter how long it takes.

However, Chris is not allowing his past tragedies and loss of Wicca to deter him from moving forward. He is keeping himself very busy as he awaits his day at court.

Immediately following Wicca’s death Chris established a foundation in her memory called Wicca’s K9 Justice Foundation. The foundation will help by providing affordable resources to dog owners for training, rehabilitation, or legal assistance as well as veterinary fees for sterilazation. They also work to keep the public informed about current or upcoming animal control laws and by-laws across Quebec. They are also instrumental in helping reputable certified rescues with financial and legal needs.

The response to the Wicca K9 Justice Foundation has been very positive and many are more than willing to help Chris make his mission possible. They have had several lucrative fund raisers which enabled them to make large donations of food and supplies to local area shelters.

To further help prevent others from facing the same heartbreak he has, Chris has taken a new career path as a certified dog trainer and owner of Seirios Dog Training Academy. He is focusing on rehabilitating and and modifying dogs cited in aggressive dog cases. According to Chris “So many dogs are deemed dangerous and it’s just not the case. They are often scared or lacking structure and they do not deserve to lose their lives because of this.”

Today marks the one year anniversary since Wicca’s life was taken and Chris’s life was changed forever. However Chris will not allow Wicca to be forgotten or her death be in vain. He is rebuilding his life in the wake of a tragedy that should never have happened. His goal is to save as many dogs as possible from a corrupt justice system. Unfortunately Wicca had to pay the ultmate price.

Two candle light vigils will be held today in honor of Wicca and all other dogs who have lost their lives. Although candles may burn out, Wicca’s light will continue to shine on in the lives of those who loved her and for all those who continue to fight corruption in all its forms.

The day of mourning, the day after the day of.  I beseech the sky to shed tears in order to wash away the tears on my face.   This is the first day of the time after. This is the beginning of a new time, the days of pain, the days of sorrow. We are in mourning. The sky looks down and sheds its tears for … [Read More its Good For You...]

History Being Sold to the Highest Bidder

History Being Sold to the Highest Bidder by Amy Lignor   For the longest time, scientists and archaeologists have been confused and bemused by various discoveries they’ve unearthed that offer little or no explanation as to the who, what, and why of the people who created these things or left them behind. Even now, in 2017, there are discoveries being studied; stories that were once legends now have actual bits of proof being found that … [Read More its Good for You.....]

Can Troy Aikman Win MVP?

Can Troy Aikman Win MVP? by Amy Lignor   What a strange title for an article, aye? Of course the ‘old man’ of the Dallas Cowboys can’t win MVP. Troy Aikman was an elite QB, with three Super Bowl rings to prove that fact. However, Aikman hasn’t actually suited-up since leaving behind his Cowboys uniform in 2001. The number one overall draft pick in 1989, Aikman was the MVP of Super Bowl XXVII, and was elected to the Pro Football … [Read More its Good for You...]
