N.Y. Baseball Shows Signs of Jurassic Park

 by Amy Lignor

This year the Yankees have already received more publicity than half the NFL teams who are truly struggling with some brutal injuries and court cases. A-Rod has been a bone of contention for months  now, and even though the fans are behind him, his continuous headlines seem to take away from the fact that the Yankees are…well, the Yankees.

Just Sunday night a new headline came about when Ryan Dempster hit Alex Rodriguez with a fastball at Fenway Park. And I mean, HIT! There is a great deal of animosity toward A-Rod and the Yankees and perhaps Dempster, who was suspended five games for the baseballincident, was taking out the entire world’s aggression in that moment.

The Yankees took that moment to be upset that it was only a five-game suspension, never speaking about A-Rod’s suspension worries where some people believe he should have been suspended for the rest of the year and even longer.

Team members on the Yankees stated that the one hit on Sunday got them fired up and ready to challenge any and all that come near them in order to win the World Series once again. But that will be a challenge. They have a hard road to walk to get there, seeing as that there are three teams ahead of them they must somehow jump over just to get a wild-card berth.

Even though some experts and fans rally around A-Rod while others scream for the 211-game suspension to be handed down immediately for his ‘forays’ into doping, the team seems to be sticking by him no matter what. The Yankees’ manager states that they are a close-knit group and that this year has brought them together for one goal and one goal only – winning.

This is the owner who also believes that Dempster was gunning for A-Rod from the very beginning, like a vigilante. Now, protecting your own is fine; the Yankees are right about that. They need to come together and basically not screw up even one game in order to rise as champions once again. However, that rise – that championship – may be the only thing that will bring back the loyalty because the whole mess with A-Rod has gone beyond frustrating.

But…let’s walk away from Yankees Stadium for a respite in order to see what the absolutely dead silent Mets have been doing. Talk about a good strategy. The Mets have stayed out of the papers and are basically lounging in the background as A-Rod and the Yankees become more and more flawed in the newspapers.

They are at Citi Field and quite relaxed for the most part. And times have certainly changed. The Mets were the ‘loony ones’ for a time while the Yankees were that strong, steady, reliable team that simply moved forward every year and made sure to bring the City championships. This time around, the shoe is on the other foot. The Mets have become the sure-footed team as the Yankees continue to dwell in some epic baseball saga because of one man‘s star power.

Tuesday the Mets defeated the first-place Atlanta Braves, 5-3, and barely a word was said about it – even by them. They have remained silent, just getting better and better. Rookie Zack Wheeler, pitched six and two-thirds scoreless innings. He has gone 5-1 with a 3.08 earned run average over nine starts since July 1st. So while A-Rod is stuck in a very loud mess, the Mets are talking about bringing the kid along and ascending to the top of the baseball heap.

Even the Mets’ news that right-handers Jenrry Mejia and Jeremy Hefner would require elbow surgery barely made the headlines.

You know what will make the headlines, however? Remember those velociraptors that Spielberg created for ‘Jurassic Park’? They always hunted in twos and threes; while you had your eye on the one directly in front of you, one came from the side and took you down. This seems a lot like what’s going on in baseball. As long as one and all are staring at A-Rod and his continuous troubles, here may just be a velociraptor in a Mets uniform that will take the world by storm and capture the only headline the Yankees are dying to get.

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy

History Being Sold to the Highest Bidder

Super Bowl LI’s Message: Patriotism

Super Bowl LI’s Message: Patriotism by Amy Lignor   There are some people waking up this morning completely stunned. Why? Because they shut the Super Bowl off after the third quarter.
