Named Martin, the tan and white pit bull came to the shelter as a stray from NY 10451 last month and is still waiting to be adopted out. If not adopted out or pulled by a rescue, Martin may soon be put to death. According to his facebook page, a volunteer describes the dog thus:
“Martin is a mature dog and quite a catch at eighty pounds! Aside from two calluses, Martin is a handsome and very healthy looking dog. He is well designed and his coat is perfect. He could benefit from some leash training because Martin pulls on the leash. He also appears to be housetrained. Martin is a friendly chap. In the street, he is nice or indifferent to other dogs met. No ‘macho’ attitude. He would not sit on command until I decided to speak Spanish and then a miracle happened: Martin sat and put on a big smile…indeed, Martin is a nice character, a big bear of a dog who will make the nicest companion. This is New York where many languages are spoken…Martin is at the Manhattan Care Center, waiting to be your BFF.”
To adopt Martin or ask for information, contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000.
For more information on adopting please read the following:
DO NOT call the shelter and say you are adopting unless you truly intend on physically going to the shelter to adopt the dog. It ties up phones lines and is a waste of the staff’s time to explain the adoption procedure over the phone for someone who is purposely not going to show up. They need every free second of their time to answer calls, assist actual adopters, process intakes, and care for the animals. More importantly, they will note the dog’s file that an adopter is en route which will prevent an actual adopter from saving the dog. This is considered a “fake adoption” hold and that is how dogs fall through the cracks and end up being killed.
For more information on a particular dog, email email@example.com but ONLY if serious about adopting, and ONLY if you are able to GO TO the shelter in-person. Please do not email for status updates… the only thing you will accomplish is spamming their in boxes and causing REAL adopter emails to go un-noticed. Contact the NYC ACC at (212) 788-4000 for further automated instructions.
