Keeping the Whitetail Habitat in Pristine Shape with Game Sled

Keeping the Whitetail Habitat in Pristine Shape with Game Sled

 by ZZ Troutski

Land managers and hunters know that in order to achieve the perfect hunting season, creating and maintaining an ideal whitetail habitat is a must.

Hunters want the whitetail population healthy. As they put together their essential gear, they purchase the Game Sled from Hunting’s a Drag, Inc. because they want nothing more than to be able to use the lightweight device that weighs six pounds and can transport up to four hundred.

The reason for that is, hunters are always conservationists. They make sure to get the Game Sled because this gurney can not only easily extract the deer from its habitat without pain and agony on the pelt of the animal or the hunter’s muscles – but will also not cause any damage to the habitat, itself.

In order to make sure that the herd is healthy for fall, hunters and land managers make sure to gain a full understanding of what needs to be done to the habitat to best help the deer. Wildlife management plans are a must, and cover everything from White tail-Road Trekin Adventures-BeFirst Media-how to best provide natural shelter and water sources to providing food crops that will give deer the high-protein they need to grow.

It’s a fact that even though deer have the ability to adapt to all different locations, climates and terrain, they thrive when located near the edges of a forest. This is for many reasons, the biggest one being the diversity of plant growth and health of the native vegetation. Deer will forage in clearings at night but are sure to stick close to that thick cover in order to hide – especially when the sun is out.

Feeding on all different types of grasses, Deer will head for plant leaves, fruit and the seeds produced by  woody trees and shrubs (AKA: mast). By taking all this into consideration, the ideal habitat offers a combination of cleared areas that will provide ground forage; trees and shrubs that will help their diet as well as offer cover; mature hardwood forests that produce native mast; and a water source.

Depending on the region you live in, mast that deer will ultimately turn to include everything from; acorns and beechnuts, apples, cherries, crabapples and berries; to leaves, twigs and buds from certain trees, such as sugar maple, white ash, tulip-poplar, birch, oak, basswood, dogwood, apple and pin cherry

Keeping the population healthy also means making sure the number of deer are not too high. If there are too many ‘diners’ on the land and not enough food, overcrowding becomes a huge problem and causes those magnificent stags to look for a better – more private place to roam.

Enhancing weight and antler development is the main focus here. So an investment of both money and time is necessary to achieve and then maintain a permanent population of quality deer that will call your land home.

Many ways that will keep the ideal forest in tip-top shape for the whitetail comes in the form of timber production, harvesting, thinning and controlled burning. All of these will actually stimulate growth of deer forage and help rejuvenate the habitat.

Those protein-rich food sources – planting the ultimate food crops in the spring and summer – are also a standard to improve growth. Whereas, when the fall and winter come around, food that’s higher in starches and sugars are necessary to help the whitetail build up its fat.

Seeding, mineral mixtures – deer growth and fulfillment is a must. After all, when the hunting season comes to pass, the herd should be strong, ready, and have the ability to awe the hunter.

The Game Sled then becomes the essential item needed to extract the animal. That way, all of the hard work you put into creating the ideal habitat does not go to waste.
