Keeping ‘Green’ in a Bright, White World

The wind blows. The ice falls and the snowflakes descend from the sky, as people pull out their shovels and wool jackets and await those fun moments that include cleaning out the driveway and heading out on sand-covered streets. All of this work that a person must go winter-duringthrough when facing the winter months depletes the body’s energy. However, there is a way to keep the energy up-and-running when it comes to the inside of your home.

 

Everyone should learn about the various changes they can make in order for their home to be more environmentally-sound. There are various energy resources that are harmful to your surroundings; and when it comes to purchase price, they are extremely harmful to your wallet.

 

But there are a few things you can do in order to adapt your home and keep it ‘green’ when winter throws its worst at you. The first and foremost idea is to work on that heat pump. Make sure the maintenance is done before it gets too cold. That way, you can make sure that your prices do not rise out of control, while taking care of the air around you.

 

There are also many who are turning to Energy Star products that will heat the home and bring optimum efficiency while they do it. It’s not only the heating system that can be changed, either. There are a ton of appliances out there that are Energy Star verified, which means everything from your icebox to your oven to your dishwasher can be made extremely efficient. You cut down on escalating prices and protect the environment all at the same time.

 

When searching for Energy Star appliances, the products will have the blue energy star logo on them, with labels that offer a full Logo Energy Starexplanation on how much they will cost each month to operate. Your bills sink and the appliances last far longer than anything else on the market.

 

In addition, check your house for various things that are plugged in yet not being used. Make sure to unplug them in order to save more energy. Just because you believe that when a system is ‘off’ it’s not draining electricity, you are wrong.

 

Any plugged-in device is stealing valuable energy from the home. And research has shown that when you unplug these products you can save all that extra energy which means a savings of at least $100 per device per year.

 

Now we come to the water issue. The winter is freezing cold and a hot shower is just the ticket to relax and take the chill out of your bones, However, the longer and hotter the shower or bath is, the worse your water usage becomes. Decrease time (even though you really don’t want to), and you will find major savings will appear because the costs have been diminished significantly. There are also various shower-heads that can be purchased that will decrease the amount of water you’re presently using.

 

And…as an idea for next year, think about the installation of a green roof. A green roof most definitely reduces cooling bills in the summer; but what many people do not think about is the fact that the extra insulation that a green roof provides to your home will save serious cash on your heating bills. And the positive impact the green roof will have on the environment is so large that it’s unable to put a price on it.

 

In addition, you’re adding to the sheer beauty of your home and the neighborhood where you live. There are so many types of green roofs; from shallow soil foundations that support low-growing plants, to deep soil based roofs with tall trees and even vegetable gardens, that you have a wealth of creative ideas to choose from.

 

So when the weather outside is frightful, your home can be a ‘green; delight all winter long. Save cash and help the environment; what better Christmas gift could you give and receive than that?
