Jason Blankenship – Creator of the Stellar Band, Man Made!
Hello everybody! If you saw the first article, you will already know that I am a COMPLETE and utter Man Made fan now. In case you don’t remember, or your Labor Day was far too long, Man Made is the truly fantastic band that I spoke of two weeks ago that literally had me at, “Hello.”
Again, I have never been obsessed. Not a big “hot vampire” fan over here, but music is literally the greatest thing that was ever invented. It stops aggression (or makes it, depending on the band); it releases tension, anxiety, and takes us all into a world of entertainment, fun, enjoyment – all the great things you expect from life. And the men of Man Made are THE hot ticket in the music world!
Mind-Altering was the statement I used for Man Made. Their tone, vibe, lyrics – everything – this band has put together for every single one of their songs is truly amazing. The State of Georgia can claim these music wizards but, it is time for them to share with the rest of us. Man Made released their first original album titled, “Starting With You,” at the end of 2010; and, since the release of that fantastic album, Man Made has been proving left and right that they are headed straight for the Grammy stage. This is not an over-exaggeration. The reviews for their album are beyond extraordinary, and these men deserve ever single magnificent word! In a world that is having great difficulty finding musicians who not only know what they’re talking about, but also have the passion, skill, and talent to deliver the absolute best – Man Made is a true treasure!
I have said this before, but it bears repeating. Starting With You, the title track of the CD, is one that will have all of you females out there thinking Justin Bieber just walked into YOUR high school…believe me. Our age group has finally been given those ultimate performers who can put a ‘spark’ back in the eye and deliver an infusion of country rock and blues that will have you as excited as you used to be on Christmas morning when you went down to that tree and saw all those amazing gifts. Because a wealth of gifts is exactly what Man Made provides.
Over the next few weeks, we are going to be meeting the stellar men behind this group. And, let me tell you now, there is no comparison for the outstanding voice of lead singer, Jason Blankenship. Add to that incredible musicians like Casey Camp, Bradd Poole, Brian Abson, and Drake Kennedy, and I am practically a “giddy” girl who has just been offered the chance of a lifetime – to interview one, if not THE, best band on the music scene!
So, yes…I will be quiet now so the incredible Man Made talent can be brought into your home, lives, and hearts. Without further yapping on my part, this is…Jason Blankenship!
How did Man Made begin for you?
I started putting Man Made together shortly after I met my wife in 2005. When it began, I was playing acoustic shows at a small bar in Hiram, Georgia. It only paid seventy-five dollars a night and the money was used to buy our groceries. I first hired a Bassist to accompany me, and then added members as the finances allowed. That all led to what Man Made is today.
I would love to have some background. Can you tell fans a bit about what drew you to music?
I remember as a small child in Nashville, Tennessee, watching my father and mother play and sing with his band – a country and bluegrass band called, “Carrol and Company.” I remember how I wanted so badly to be a part of the band. My father told me that when my hand could reach around the neck of his Martin acoustic, that he would begin to teach me how to play; and I made my first appearance on stage at the Bell Witch Opera at six-years-old…and here I am now.
What do you personally hope Man Made will bring to the listening public? What are your goals for the band?
I want to convey the emotion and the message of the song to our listeners. I want the lyrics and the melody to take their minds on a tour of the story behind the song. In short, I want to give people songs that are real. Whether I sing about love found or love lost – from driving trucks to singing in ‘honkey tonk’ bars – I want the listener to be able to relate to our music. I want to see Man Made make it to main stream radio. I also want to someday play live at the CMA’s. I would love to play at the famous Rhyman auditorium.
I know Georgia is your home base, did it help growing up in the south where country and country-rock/bluegrass is a much-loved genre of music?
Absolutely, my family and I are from Nashville and we moved to Georgia when I was six. We brought with us the love of music; Nashville country gold was on the radio in my house every day. Living in Georgia has allowed me to see the country music scene here grow, and become a fertile soil for so many great artists.
Do you like performing live? How do you get prepared before going out there to that waiting crowd?
I love it!! I like to have an energy drink before shows. Also I like to make sure I have a water to take on stage with me, and say a quick prayer right before I go on.
Who are some of your own personal icons?
Earl Thomas Conley, Vern Gosdin, Ricky Skaggs, Stevie Ray Vaughn, Chet Atkins, Brad Paisley, Zac Brown.
I ask this of every musician and singer because our fans like to know. How do you feel about programs such as American Idol being a catalyst to introducing the next “star?”
That is hard to answer. So many talented singers have been discovered as a result of Idol. I still, however, feel that fame and stardom should be earned through experience, hard work, and talent. I think as a songwriter, someone who has lived through the real life experiences that it takes to make it in this industry while maintaining a life outside of it can bring far more depth to a song. Hearing people sing the truth about their life is always more moving.
What is your personal favorite genre of music – rock, bluegrass, country? And why?
Country and Blues are my two favorites. I enjoy any music that is real.
I would assume you have very supportive families? Are your wives happy with the Man Made dream?
I have the most supportive wife in the world. She believes in me even when I doubt myself. My family is also very supportive.
Where do you hope Man Made will be in the next year?
On your car’s stereo system as loud as it can go! Also playing in your city’s biggest venue!
Where can people purchase your CD?
On Reverb Nation and at our shows; coming soon to ITunes.
Is a new CD currently in the works?
Yes. We have some awesome new songs we can’t wait to release.
And…I always end with these special questions because readers love them.
What is your favorite word? Yes
What is your least favorite word? I hate the word ‘Can’t.’
What turns you on? Women in cowboy boots! And sensuality.
What turns you off? Negativity.
What sound or noise do you love? My baby girl’s footsteps crossing the hallways to come pounce on my wife and I in the mornings. I always pretend I’m asleep so I can catch her by surprise when she jumps in the bed.
What sound or noise do you hate? I hate to hear someone crunch or rattle a chip bag.
What is your favorite curse word? S**t…I hate to admit it, but that is the one that fly’s out before I realize it.
What profession other than your own would you like to attempt? I would love to be a hunting/fishing guide.
What profession would you not like to attempt? EMT. I would not be able to handle seeing a child that was dead or dying; that would be the worst thing ever.
If Heaven exists, what would you like to hear God say when you arrive at the Pearly Gates? (It does exist.) I want to hear, “this is my servant, in whom I am well pleased.”
Okay, yes, Georgia has Man Made, but it won’t be long until the rest of the world gets to enjoy them. Yes, Jason Blankenship is absolutely happily married, ladies, and that’s why he is so amazing at giving his audience the words that fulfill a person’s heart. Watch carefully, because this band is going to absolutely soar into the stratosphere.
Man Made is unstoppable! And, the CMA’s? Man Made will be playing at that venue and winning those awards even sooner than they thing! Stick with us, because all the band members will be stopping by over the next few weeks, and each and every one will tell us all about their desires, hopes, and dreams for the future.
Until Next Time, Everybody!
