“There’s only a few ways to declare a canal safe for swimming after dumping millions of gallons of raw sewage into it.
Commissioner Heidi O’Sheehan and Interim City Manager Cathy Swanson-Rivenbark tried to do it with a splash.
It’s one thing to issue a proclamation that the canal is safe for swimming and fishing, and it’s quite another to take a plunge into the canal.
I applaud the Hollywood city officials for demonstrating the principle that actions speak louder than words. Commissioner O’Sheehan even took the plunge with her son in tow, she has earned the respect of her constituents.
Mayor Peter Bober should follow the lead of the commissioners and take his family fishing in the canal, and eat the fish right there on the riverbanks.
In fact, every politician should follow the example of the commissioners and back up their words with deeds. For example, if there’s an accident at a nuclear plant, it’s not enough for city officials to reassure the nearby residents that there’s no danger, they should move in with a resident that lives near the power plant for a month.
