Holiday Football: Keep the Flags in Your Pocket

 by Amy Lignor

Yes, the holiday season is upon us and the Thanksgiving bird comes second when speaking about football. Yesterday we saw a bouquet of…garbage. Let’s face it; when the referees are going to be investigated for swearing at the players (even though if the players swore at them they would be granted a flag immediately), then it seems that the bullying has been brought OUT on the field.

QB’s are being hurt in the NFL. Hence, rules and regulations now abound. Safety, yes. However, if the rules and regulations keep deangeloincreasing every five minutes, we’re going to have to say goodbye to the football gridiron we love and hello to a national game of flag football. The only thing that will remain are the uniforms. Of course, for Pittsburgh, they might want to throw those out as well.

The big news, flag-wise, came in the San Francisco game yesterday when the 49ers were penalized for grabbing – around the neck – the Saints QB. What’s odd is that just a few plays before, Kaepernick was grabbed by the facemask and pulled down by the Saints, yet no flag could be found flying anywhere. Another oddity? Although the Saints QB looked like he was being grabbed around the neck, it was caught on camera that he was actually falling at the time, which means if he was standing, the ‘bear hug’ play would have worked out just fine. The 49ers pulled back to make sure his head was not hit, obeying the rules, yet they were flagged anyway.

Then we head on to the Broncos versus the Chiefs. The best red zone defense versus the best red zone offense. Come on! Even the undefeated Chiefs didn’t look all that surprised that their first loss was handed to them on a silver platter by Manning. Now these teams are tied in their division 9-1, with everyone looking at the Broncos as if the Super Bowl winners have already been chosen. But…next week we are looking at a Manning/Brady match-up, so I wouldn’t be too quick to call this one.

a_560x375Not to mention, the Seahawks are looking almost unstoppable, even if their win-loss column doesn’t show it. Not sure if it’s the neon green socks or not, but these receivers look as if they’re running as fast as Superman, while doing major acrobatics in the air in order to come down with the ball.

Oh…and the Bengals? Really? Yup…really. The Cincinnati Bengals are on TOP of their division.

The Packers? Well, without Aaron Rogers most ‘cheese heads’ are simply closing their eyes and waiting for their beloved QB to come back and pull them out of the losses they will keep racking up without him.

The Cowboys? The Lone Star State is in tears. But buck up, guys! After all, remember Aikman and his first season? THAT was scary. And he ended up bringing three Super Bowl trophies home to you anyway! So miracles can happen.

RGIII and the Skins saw yet another game slip by as the Eagles wiped the floor with them; whereas teams like the Houston Texans are not even being spoken about this year because, well…there’s not much to say.

This season has certainly been an interesting one. Even Peyton Manning is sitting back and staring at the New York Giants and his brother as they push aside the fact that they lost their first six games and keep winning now time after time. He knows his brother Eli well; and the one thing Eli knows is how to be the underdog and surprise the heck out of everyone at the very end.

But the flags do need to cease, people. The referees need to hold their tongues, as well. If they’re going to penalize players for yelling at them, then they need to hold to their own high standards (supposedly) and keep their mouths shut on that field. And please stick the flags back into your pockets. Safety is a good thing, yes. But if these men wanted to pick a career that was all about safety when they were kids, they’d be standing on the sidelines – NOT on the field!

Until Next Time, Everybody,

Amy

We Are Still…All in This Together!

We Are Still…All in This Together! by Amy Lignor   December 7, 1941. Sunday morning was lovely on the Hawaiian island of Oahu. A typical Sunday, in fact, where people were moving calmly and in a relaxed “weekend-mode” stance at the U.S. Navy’s Pacific Fleet Headquarters.
