HANDEL’S “MESSIAH” UNF CHAMBER SINGERS & CHAMBER ORCHESTRA PONTE VEDRA CONCERT HALL DECEMBER 11, 2012

George Frideric Handel

Under the direction of Dr. Cara Tasher, UNF’s Chamber Singers and Chamber Orchestra will perform Handel’s “Messiah” at the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall, on December 11th, an event hosted by the Friends of the Ponte Vedra Concert Hall (FOPVCH).

“Messiah” is an English- language oratorio composed in 1741 by George Frideric Handel, with a scriptural text compiled by Charles Jennens from the King James Bible, and from the Psalms included with the Book of Common Prayer. It was first performed inDublinonApril 13, 1742, and received itsLondonpremier nearly a year later. Handel wrote Messiah for modest vocal and instrumental forces, with optional settings for many of the individual numbers. Most contemporary performances show a greater fidelity towards Handel’s original intentions.

Since its debut, there are many versions of Handel’s “Messiah”. Handel himself reworked and edited his score countless times to fit the needs and abilities of his performers. While the original is lost in a sea of variations, today’s Messiah is as close to the original as music historiographers can agree upon.
