Green Paints Are All The Rage!

 

Don’t let the headline fool you – we’re not talking about paints especially made for the ‘Irish’ lover in all of us. We’re talking about the fact that each and every week there is information coming out about the building and construction industry – which, by the way, is an industry that is growing by leaps and bounds. And one of the main issues that’s being brought up is the world of environmentally-sound products and services that the building industry is providing consumers. Whether it be the equipment being used that stops accumulation of wastewater, or helps the environment instead of harming it with extra oils, gases, or waste materials – ‘green’ paints are most definitely a part of the construction realm.

 

One of the most successful products has been ‘green’ paints; homeowners and business owners are now making sure that the paints they use – the materials that will be a part of their daily surroundings – will not only better their environment, but also provide their families and/or employees with healthy, safe air to breathe.

 

Studies being done show that all the ‘top’ paints that are now being purchased for projects in the 21st Century, have the lowest levels of volatile organic compounds (VOC’s) ever produced. Magazines and companies have shown that the rating for these particular ‘green’ paints range from very good to excellent, and the ‘smart’ companies are making sure they use only these products.

 

For single-coat coverage, these ‘green’ paints are it. They contain no more than fifty grams of VOC’s per liter, almost completely eliminating those chemicals that have a solid link to pollution, smog, and respiratory diseases. They also perform amazingly well. Not only are the colors no longer limited (seeing as that they have become so popular there are now a rainbow of colors to choose from), but they also stand up to cleaning, scrubbing, staining, and passed all mildew tests

 

Now, low-VOC paints aren’t completely odorless, so ventilation is still required, but now the actual scent is breathable, livable and will not cause the asthmatic issues and illnesses that have come before.

 

Consumer Reports, which is the largest entity that have been researching ‘green’ building materials and paints have come out with specific tips for the buyer. The largest being the fact that people should no longer buy strictly by the brand name – IMG_3853especially seeing as that several Sherwin-Williams paints ended up near the bottom of Consumer Reports Ratings, even though SW is looked at as a true icon in the industry. In addition, a consumer should make sure they pick the right ‘gloss level’ for their project. Flat paints hide a wall’s nicks but they also tend to stain quicker, so using these specific formulas for very low-traffic areas is a good thing. High-sheen, or semi gloss paints are easy to clean but also tend to dull, so using this particular batch of paints on trims windows and doors are the top choice.

 

And, as always, the consumer truly needs to look at the strengths and weaknesses of each brand. Some paints are literally made to ward off mildew, which is why they are the top-pick for any bathroom project out there. Other paints are made to resist bright sunshine and not fade over time, which means when it comes to a sunlit room, they are the top pick. As with the food you eat, there are a slew of paints with different attributes and properties that you have to research before your final choice is made. You are also talking about finding money-saving products.

 

Traditional household paints contain a great many chemicals, including those hideous VOC’s, which bring carbon-based chemicals into your environment. The reason for the ‘volatile’ part of this product is that they are, in fact, volatile; they work almost like a gas. So the type and brand of paint, is something that must be thought over. Especially when the consumer finds out that VOC’s have been linked in scientific studies to bad health, eye, nose and throat irritation, nausea, headaches and even cancer.

 

There are also many building companies and contractors who already know all this. They understand that VOC’s can “give off gas” from the walls into the air as the paint is applied or as it dries. This, combined with the fact that the paint is usually applied to a large area, can cause people living or spending time in these freshly painted homes side effects.
