For Better Health, Get the Leash

~ ZZ Troutski

Bridger-waiting to go on a walk-roadtrekin.comEveryone already knows that their dog is the best friend they could possibly have. They stand by your side, love you unconditionally, and even provide outdoor lovers with all kinds of fun things to do all year long.

Whether it be the hunting dog who keeps you company and works to bring those birds back home to the dinner table; or the dog who plays outdoors and enjoys every leaf, tree, or mountain with so much energy that he/she makes you feel alive, a canine is definitely the perfect outdoor companion.

Dog walking is not only a great way to stay fit and healthy, but it’s also the number one way to take time out to relax. Walking is an exercise regimen that doctors rave about and want everyone to do on a daily basis, but it’s also a daily exercise that helps your dog stay healthy.

When you bring a new dog into the family, or you’re just starting to train your dog how to behave in the outdoors as they get a taste of the beauty that nature provides, there are ways to get your dog excited about the journey. The first thing you have to remember is that, like children, the dog is tuned into your mood. If you’re unhappy or already wishing you didn’t have to go for a walk, the dog will sense that and feel the same way. They will have no desire to walk and will be more than a bit annoyed, which will cause you more frustration.

Some people love to ride bikes in the Great Outdoors; they like to go on that long-distance run or hike up mountains, which make a dog the wrong companion. So make sure to remember a walk is just the right thing. New people, new sights – everything is there for you when you choose to walk the dog. In cities, there are always new scenes and people. In rural areas, deer, squirrel, and the environment around you will be awesome.

To make sure you and your dog are never bored, take a different route so there are always new sights and smells. And for those who are training their dog, walking is a great way to get them to understand other commands you are using in the house. You can take a break during your walk and challenge your dog with new lessons; they’re intelligent and they like to be inspired. On their daily walking adventures they can learn ‘sit’ and ‘stay’ and receive treats for good listening skills.

If you have a dog who used to love walking and is simply not in the mood anymore, it’s up to you to re-excite him or her. It’s good to shorten the time spent outside so that the dog wants to go more and more often. Eventually he/she will be so excited about it that they’ll practically run to the door like they did when they were a puppy.

Even though this seems like an odd statistic in America, the Kennel Club U.K. actually surveyed dog owners and it turned out that one in five did not  walk their dogs on a daily basis. The dogs were overweight and more than a little bored. This is the last thing you want for yourself, so why would you want that for your dog?

When it comes to people who walk their dogs, good health is found. They are much more likely to meet their expected levels of exercise to keep them fit. Although professional dog walking services are out there for you, think first. With your best friend beside you, you not only have a way to spend time with someone you love, but you also have a perfect way to maintain your health. The healthier you are, the longer you and your dog will be able to spend together. So get the leash and head out on your next adventure today!
