Finding the Best College ‘Sports’ Towns With Mission Tuition!

Finding the Best College ‘Sports’ Towns With  Mission Tuition!

Readers, over the past few weeks we have been speaking in-depth about a fantastic company called Mission Tuition. With each article written there has been more and more response about how incredible this company really is.  Not surprising, considering that they not only offer a way for ALL income levels to save for their children’s education, but they also offer sites, information and important data that all students and family’s can use in order to make the right decisions and truly explore all the ins-and-outs of college planning.

For a brief recap, Mission Tuition is the first step that parents need to take in order to begin saving the money necessary to send their children to college.  By signing up for a free account with this company that offers a proven methodology to save money, all parents can build their savings by doing the most simple thing in the world – they shop.  By shopping online, or in the stores of their very favorite retailers, Mission Tuition allows everyone to save. When shopping online, participants receive cash back rewards, coupons and discounts that save them money; money that is then placed in an “educational savings account” held at Wells Fargo. And when you head into the stores to shop ‘live and in person’ you have two options:  If you want both the advertised discount plus the cash back, you make the purchase online and go into the store to pick up your items.  Option number two allows you to make your purchase at the register, and STILL receive the advertised discount.  This way YOU decide whether it goes into your savings account or into your pocket.  This money sits there and accumulates while you search, investigate and ultimately find the best investment vehicle (529 plan) for your child.

This week, the most talked about subject in the world is sports.  As we all know the championship games just took place and the Pro Bowl and Super Bowl are now on the immediate horizon, so it makes sense to delve into the sports world this week.  College and sports go hand-in-hand – from choosing a college based on the surrounding area and how their sports programs affect their locations, to applying for athletic scholarships, funds are extremely important when going in this ‘particular direction’ where college planning is concerned.  All families should remember that even if their child is a fantastic sportsperson, they will still need that extra cash from a 529 to pay for all the added expenses that come along with college. And Mission Tuition is the company that can make sure that money is there when you need it.

The University of Michigan is most famous for its football team, the Wolverines, who play in the severely packed confines of the ‘Big House,’ but the town of Ann Arbor where the school is located is the true ‘star.’  A great college, low crime rate and affordable housing all add up to make Ann Arbor the highest ranked location on the lists of ‘best college towns.’  It even beats out Palo Alto – the home of Stanford; and Madison – the home of the University of Wisconsin.

It’s easy to understand the ‘draw’ of sports-based college towns.  These cities not only have dedicated sports programs, but they have a myriad of arts and cultural events.  Even though a beloved college town like State College, Pennsylvania may not have the population of New York City, the fantastic university attracts top-flight entertainment, so the arts are well taken care of.  When creating a list of the best college towns, various statistics are taken into consideration.  Football is usually always the most important sport at these universities, but for a true sports fan part of the college-town experience is having access to track, soccer, baseball teams, and more.

College towns are judged on real estate prices compared to the median income to make sure that the employment options and salaries are a good ‘fit.’  The subjects of public-school quality and crime rates are also added in to see the difference.  For example, in the state of North Carolina you have Durham, which is home to Duke, and you have Chapel Hill, which is home to UNC, but Chapel Hill is the winner of the ‘best college town’ because of its extremely good public school system and seriously low crime rate.

Another thing to remember is that college towns are extremely important to businesses and investors because there is always a ‘new’ flow of renters – students and professors – as well as employees.  Corporations, especially ones that are into technology,  also like to have their home base in college towns. Why?  Because these colleges churn out new dynamic students and extremely skilled graduates that these companies need for their profits to grow.

Now, after you have found that specific college town that you really want your child to be a part of, you start to think about the sports programs that your child wants to explore.  For this, you have to take a serious look at what you want out of a school. Even though much of the recruiting process is showing coaches what you can do for them and how you can better their team, you come first.  You need to make sure that the school is a good ‘fit’ for your future.

Now what you need to know, and what the parent will always say, is that you need a university where an actual education is extremely important.  No matter what position you play or what sport you excel at, eventually everyone’s ‘reign’ in any sport comes to an end.  And if you’re not one of the Montana’s or DiMaggio’s of this world, then you really should make sure that you have an education to back you up.

So don’t limit opportunities by only looking at one or two schools.  The more opportunities you have the more control you have over your future.  Yes, you will always have a ‘dream school,’ but don’t let this limit your choices.  Make sure you have a list to look into that meet your criteria and are solid opportunities that you can pursue if the ‘dream’ doesn’t work out.

Also, you need to remember that there are many forms of financial aid other than athletic scholarships, and there are also lots of terrific schools other than those at the NCAA Division I level. Student-athletes often receive grants and/or other forms of financial aid of some kind from colleges at all division levels.

But…you’ll need more.  Providing you with access to the retailers you already shop at, the money you save with Mission Tuition through discounts, rebates, coupons, and even a percentage back on your credit or debit card goes into the savings account, waiting for the moment when you choose the best investment vehicle that’s right for you.

Don’t count on athletic scholarships alone.  Explore other sources of financial aid, and always remember that the major benefit of college is to obtain an education, and Mission Tuition will make that a whole lot easier!

Until Next Time, Everybody.
