Feed Those Birdies the Green Way

It’s finally spring—maybe summer where you live, but a wonderful time of year to attract the birds to your yard, have a glass of wine while you view their interactions and feeding, and to make sure you have a nice dose of nature in your very own backyard.

A wonderful way to attract these charming creatures to your yard is to make birdfeeders from your recyclables: it’s easy, fun, and you can make as many as you wish.

Below are some easy ways to make cute birdfeeders from found materials.

The Milk Carton Birdfeeder: This one is a classic, but you can actually add a very cute “bark” cover that will also help your birdfeeder last longer. Take a milk carton , and cover it with pieces of duct tape, to give that “bark” look. Staple the top shut, cut holes at each of the sides, and slide a dowel 350x250birdfeeder5_rdax_65thru the carton, so the birds to perch. Cut drainage holes in the bottom of the carton. Make sure you put in small holes at the top of the carton, so the birds can enter the feeder, but too small for squirrels.

Paint the carton brown, to give it the bark finish, string your feeder with twine, add birdseed, and hang for hours of enjoyment.

Soda Bottle Feeder: This is perhaps the simplest of feeders, because you simply need a 1-2 liter clear plastic empty soda bottle. Make small holes, big enough for the birds you want to attract to be able to to nibble, and slide in spoon spoons for your trays. Fill the spoons with birdseed. Use string or fishing line to hang your feeder.

Glass Bottle Feeder with Wood Frame. First choose a glass bottle with a screw top, and find two pieces of scrap wood for a back frame. Glue or nail the wood pieces together so the bottom piece forms a ledge. Put a hook on the back of the wood for hanging. Adhere two hooks to suspend the glass bottle, so the small opening is above the wood ledge, with just a bit of room. Fill your birdfeeder, and the food will come out the bottom as it is eaten. You may also put a shallow dish or lid at the bottom, to give the birdies a bowl for their food.

The Egg Carton Birdfeeder: This is perfect for small children, because it is so easy! Simply cut off the lid of a cardboard egg carton, put a small hole in all four corners of the egg carton, and put string thru the holes.

Fill the cups with bird seed, and hang the feeder by gathering all the strings and suspending.

Cereal Birdfeeder: Another easy way to attract the birds to your yard is to string any cereal with a donut shape, then hang these tasty garlands wherever you desire!

The Tube Feeder: Fun, and also simple! Simply take a cardboard tube ready for recycling, and thread a long piece of twine or yarn thru the end. Put your tube on wax paper, coat with honey, then roll in birdseed. It’s easy to hang nearly anywhere!

Orange You Glad?: Make tasty cups of birdie treats by saving your orange or grapefruit halves. Scoop out any insides left, and make holes on either side, threading with twine. Make your birdies treats with items from your cupboard: combine oatmeal, peanut butter, sunflower seeds, cereal, and raisins, with a bit of the sweet fruit, for the best results. Get creative, and keep count of the different birds you attract!*

*When filled, the cups tend to be heavy, so tie to strong branches of a bush or tree.

Another Easy One: You can also make a birdfeeder easily by dampening a bagel, threading it with twine, and coating the bagel with birdseed—then simply hang.

Experiment with items in your house, and you may find a brand new way to both reuse items and keep turn your backyard into your private aviary.
