As if using illegal drugs wasn’t immoral enough, now athletes have taken to misusing prescription drugs to improve their performance as well. Turn on the local news on any given day and you’ll likely hear more than one story about a professional athlete who was hospitalized or even killed due to prescription drug side effects.

The use of steroids and other well-known drugs has been illegal in most athletic associations from the late 1970s. They were declared a controlled substance by the Anabolic Steroids Control Act of 1990, and are illegal to use without a prescription. Also illegal without a prescription due to the Anabolic Steroids Act of 2004 are steroid “precursors”–substances that, when they enter the body, turn themselves into steroids. Because steroids and steroid precursors are commonly used to treat conditions such as wasting away due to AIDS or cancer, the chances of a professional athlete having a prescription for them while still being in good enough shape to work are non-existent. Be advised that one kind of steroid precursor, DHEA, is still available as an over-the-counter product.

Commonly misused prescription and over-the-counter drugs as of 2010 include anti-allergy medications, non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) such as Ibuprofen, anti-asthmatic medications, and oral antibiotics. A questionnaire study performed by the Finnish National Olympic Committee on over 400 Olympic athletes revealed that professional athletes use more than twice the amount of prescription drugs as the same number of non-athletes who were also polled. Over 18 percent of athletes in sports demanding speedy and powerful performances used NSAIDs heavily, and one in five reported side effects of the drugs as well. Those in fields demanding endurance took large amounts of anti-allergy medications –19 percent confessed to using them.

The major side effects of excessive use of NSAIDs are kidney and liver failure, ulcers, and a tendency toward internal bleeding, particularly after being injured (as often happens in sports.)

Sports are costly. Whether you’re playing basketball, football, soccer, floor hockey or any of the other myriad of team sports out there, all require tough gear in order to play safely and properly. Hockey would be extremely dangerous without knee pads, elbow pads and helmets; football requires elaborate shoulder pads and helmets with protective wire over the face. Even sports that don’t require safety gear, like basketball, take money to purchase matching team jerseys. Some sports also require specialty footwear, such as cleats or ice-skates.

Any sport that involves projectile items needs the funds to buy them and other accessories, too. Basket balls, soccer balls, footballs, hockey sticks, tennis balls and rackets, badminton shuttlecocks and rackets…the list goes on and on. If the team travels, that adds yet more expense. Places to stay, meals for a team of people, and travel ticket costs must be taken into account. A college football team that plays internationally can rack up expenses as high as 18 million dollars per year. Fundraisers help support a team, but even with them, most teams usually operate in the red.

One way that sports teams have found to raise large amounts of money for their operation expenses is to advertise for sponsors who then donate funds to support them. Team members agree to wear company logos on their gear, to only use certain kinds of sports drinks, and to put product or company logos onto the sides of their carpool vans — all of which provides advertising for their sponsors. To ensure that their sponsors are legit, teams may subject them to an affiliate program review. Affiliate program reviewers investigate potential affiliates and sponsors to ensure that they are legitimate and aren’t ripping people off to advertise for them without paying up in the end.

Affiliating with sponsor companies accounts for a large amount of most college sports teams’ funds.

With the heavy pressure to perform, many athletes resort to overuse of stimulants and prescription drugs to keep going. Sports, especially team sports, are grueling and demand long days of intense physical activity during both training and game times. The average pro athlete uses prescription drugs in over twice the quantities of the non-athlete. Pain relievers, anti-inflammatory medication, and anti-asthma and anti-allergy medication are amongst the most commonly taken substances, and virtually all athletes use caffeine and other energy-boosting blends to cope with too little sleep and too much physical activity.

Everyone has heard about a coach pushing their players harder and longer than is healthy — sometimes to the breaking point. In team sports, there is a lot of social pressure placed upon members of the team to uphold the standard. Anybody who falls behind is the weak link, the one who brings the whole team down. Between this stigma and the high expectations of the coach, athletes are pressured to perform — and sometimes they turn to “quick fixes” like prescription drugs and stimulants.

Prescription drugs can relieve the pain and swelling of injuries that your body doesn’t have time to heal before getting back into the game. They can give bursts of energy when you’re feeling tired, and keep you awake for more hours per day so that you can get in more practice time. Unfortunately, when taken in excess, prescription drugs often have dangerous side effects. Some can cause failure of major organs such as the kidneys and liver. Some can become addictive, and then even when the side effects set in and you know they’re hurting you, you can’t stop taking them.

Before you use drugs and stimulants during sports, consider this: if the idea of losing a game sounds like it’ll upset your team, imagine what they would think if you had to go into prescription drug rehab.

As many of you know, we have launched a new advertising campaign with a red couch as its centerpiece. The red couch symbolizes a place where people tell stories — stories about Florida’s Historic Coast and the great vacation opportunities found here. As part of the campaign, we created videos featuring the red couch at various locations. The results were…well, rather than me tell you about it, I think it would be best if you took a look for yourself. Just go to our homepage and check out the new video player. You can watch the latest installments in the Red Couch Chronicles, as well as other videos about the destination.

Even better, why not go to our YouTube Channel? You can watch the Red Couch Chronicles in a larger format by simply going to the Uploads section at the top of the right column and clicking on “see all”. You’ll also find other new videos including an exceptional video produced by the St. Augustine Lighthouse. Of course, you can easily subscribe to our channel and be among the first to know when new videos are added. All you need is a free YouTube or Google account to be included.

I hope you enjoy the Red Couch Chronicles. The videos are high-quality, the acting is tremendous and the stories are fun and engaging. Best of all, they show just how beautiful and entertaining a visit to Florida’s Historic Coast can be and prove beyond any doubt that “Our History is Not the Same Old Story.”

Chef Jean-Stephane Poinard Makes a Media Statement About his Father Jean-Francois Poinard

“The last time I saw my Father was June, 2007, just before my family and I came to the U.S. There are so many things I never finished with my Father and sadly, the best part of his life was still ahead. He was an amazing chef and pastry chef, a perfectionist who loved people and to share the pleasures of his food. He was a true Epicurean who was loved and respected by his colleagues. As one of France’s top chefs, he was known for his ‘cuisine and charisma’.

Unfortunately, for many years he was a different man from the Father I knew growing up, actually before his relationship with Guylene Collober. Somehow she isolated him from everyone he loved. It was a mystery to me and to our entire family why he seemed to always be under a spell, even seemed to be caught in a spider web of strange occurrences. We all recognized that she knew how to manipulate my Father and cut him from people who loved him. One by one, he lost communication with his friends, culinary colleagues and family members. In fact, for over a year when I came to America I kept my French phone # and hoped that one day he would call but it never happened. Even our children wrote him letters and cards with no replies. His birthday was May 5th and it was very difficult not to call him each year to wish him well.

We are very private people so I prefer not to go to France to his funeral. Once the gossip and spotlight have dimmed, I will go to pay my respects with my family. For now, I want to protect my children who are twelve and thirteen. I want to remember my Father as the incredible man who inspired me in my career”.

Synonymous with shopping, cocktails and fabulous dining, Manhattan attracts millions of visitors every year. Business travelers working in fashion, finance and more, retail aficionados or art lovers, or Sex and the City fans following the trail of their favorite four women, Manhattan offers world class sites and facilities to wow visitors.

Where to Stay
Accommodation can be found throughout the district; lining Central Park, in the intellectual playground of the Upper West Side, the artists’ hub of Greenwich Village or within SoHo’s trendy chic setting.

For visitors who would like a bit more independence or those staying longer term while still enjoying the bespoke and attentive service of an up-market hotel, the Manhattan luxury apartments scene is ideal, with stylish and opulent offerings to suit every need. Visitors staying in the area for a night or two will be spoilt for choice with high end hotels, with boutique, grand and every size in between being well represented.

Transportation
Getting around Manhattan can be done in a variety of ways. Hailing one of the thousands of yellow cabs is a convenient door to door service. The New York City public transport service comprises bus, rail and subway networks connecting all corners of the city morning through night. Unfamiliar visitors or new residents may find driving a little daunting at first, and it is a good idea to plan ahead to ensure a secure parking place while you are in Manhattan.

Whether it’s to be inspired by the glamor and wealth in abundance on the Upper East Side, or the cultural and ethnic diversity offered by the Lower East Side, with its resultant plethora of gastronomic delights, Manhattan is a must-visit on any trip to New York. There is so much to see and do that visitors and residents can fill endless days with the very best in art, culture and more.
