When you combine fall, winter and spring, you are only speaking about 20% of the UV exposure the body receives during the entire year. Sun shields are a way to at least halt or diminish the exposure in the summer. Also, sunscreens are still highly recommended in the defense of sunburn and skin cancer. You certainly have your choice out there: From lotions to creams; ointments to wax sticks – the one who truly wants to glow can even purchase sunscreens with glitter.

 

Applying the sunscreen at least 15 to 30 minutes before you go out is also a requirement. Put on enough so that it takes a full minute to rub in. If you’re at the beach, spread at least one ounce on your face and body. When it comes to being outside swimming, sweating, or working out, the sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours. And it must be water-resistant. Remember, skin damage happens without ever seeing an actual sunburn.

 

Clothing is also really important. Yes, even with that long, flowing hair your scalp is exposed. This means those harmful UV rays are shining down on you. Take a hat with a broad brim to make sure your ears are safe as well. And other clothing items have been designed to ward off skin-cancer-causing rays which have been dubbed with an Ultraviolet Protection Factor (UPF) rating. This rating shows how much of the sun’s rays are absorbed by the fabric. Garments that are made of unbleached cotton, high-luster polyester, and thin, satiny silk can absorb or reflect UV radiation, which will also prevent damaging rays from reaching the skin. Darker materials also help because they absorb UV light and keep it away from your body.

 

Speaking of wanting beauty when the summer is at its hottest – use lip bam. The lips are actually in major danger from the sun. Cracked, peeling, scaly lips – some of these factors can mean something far worse is happening, such as skin cancer. To keep the soft, full, healthy lips, make sure to use lip-specific products that have SPF 15 or higher. And much to the surprise of many – do not use baby oil, petroleum jelly, or high-shine lip gloss.
