More than half of the companies that hire seasonal employees transition some into permanent staff members.
This is where the phrase, self-limiting beliefs, comes into play. There are many seasonal employees that are younger in age, some are even going out and getting their very first job, but what they do not have holding them back is a past that involves a rough place of employment, or mistakes and errors they once made on the job. Nothing is there to adversely affect them; therefore, they are still able to put out premium work without worrying about what could go wrong.

Just recently a spokesman for Macy’s, said the company seeks seasonal workers who “bloom where they’re planted,” which basically means they excel no matter what project they are assigned. They do not have those self-limiting beliefs stopping them from moving forward and bringing their absolute best to the jobsite. This one retail giant plans to hire over 78,000 seasonal employees for 2011. They are truly looking at keeping the seasonal workers who do things like ask in-depth and thoughtful questions about the organization, showing they have the interest needed in order to become a permanent part of the ‘team.’ They also ask for more – more time, more projects – proving to management that they WANT to be a part of that team and will not be lazy or ‘lay down on the job.’ When they receive those extra projects, they go all out to make sure they do the absolute best job possible, solidifying the fact that they will stay on long after the Christmas decorations have been taken out of the windows.
You can simply walk down the street today and see the ‘help wanted’ signs in the windows. Even in this rough-and-tumble economy those signs are still up, and they bring with them the opportunity of full-time employment. There are also a great deal of ‘temporary’ agencies that are seeking additional staff for their clients during the holiday season. From companies like Kelly Services to Snelling & Snelling, they need workers, and ‘Temping’ is one of the fastest growing employment sectors in the country.
There are a ton of other industries that are hiring workers who begin as seasonal employees and can end up becoming major players in the advertising or marketing departments of the company. From package delivery jobs that can lead to management when it comes to huge companies like FedEx and UPS, to outdoor seasonal jobs that include everything from ski areas, to marketing and advertising for inns and the hospitality industry.
Punctuality, reliability, dependability – these are the most important factors you can bring to a job. But the belief you have in yourself, and making sure that there are no stumbling blocks that you have put in your own way, are the keys to starting on one level and rising to another quite quickly.
Commitment is one of the characteristics we have spoken about before. In order to be that optimal salesperson, a ‘golden’ resume isn’t what counts.
