Bubba’s Not the Only One Who Should Wear Green!

Bubba’s Not the Only One Who Should Wear Green!

A few months ago we brought a story to you about several sports arenas that were doing their very best to go ‘green’ and save energy, power and the environment. Seeing as that we just watched Bubba put on that famous ‘green jacket’ as the winner of the Masters, we are staying on the ‘green’ sports kick and bringing you even more information about the professionals who are trying their very best to take you ‘out to the ballgames’ in environmentally-friendly ways.

The Green Register proves everyday that they are THE voice for the modern world, and makes sure to keep us updated on all the information we, as a society, needs to learn!

No matter what jersey you wear in order to support your favorite team – there will always be one very important color we can all root for – green!

Major League Baseball, the NBA Finals, the NHL, the NCAA, the U.S. Open –  some of the very biggest games in professional sports are making a huge effort to be more environmentally conscious by using NRDC’s specially developed, Greening Advisors. The NRDC examines everything from purchasing decisions to transportation, energy use, and waste management policies – looking for all the ways they can reduce the environmental impact that comes from the wide world of sports.

For those of you who don’t know, The Green Sports Alliance is a non-profit organization whose mission is to help sports teams, venues and leagues enhance their environmental performance. The combination of Alliance members represent thirteen leagues and over ninety sports venues and teams! They truly bring together the world of sports with environmental experts in an effort to improve the environmental performance of sports facilities. We are talking about innovative solutions to some pretty large environmental challenges. They’re providing a better understanding of how sporting events can be performed in an environmentally sensitive manner.

And soon (considering how fast time flies), the second annual Green Sports Alliance Summit will be held, where everyone can learn how professional sports teams and venues have saved millions of dollars in operating expenses, reduced their environmental impact, and inspired their fans to join in their efforts. (www.greensportssummit.org)

This three day executive summit offers a myriad of stories, lectures, panels, new breakout groups, and site visits in order to introduce everyone to the best practices that can be used to help sustainability and produce bottom line benefits while still demonstrating the huge responsibility that these teams have for their community and their citizens.

The latest news comes from the Cleveland Indians, who recently unveiled their revolutionary new wind turbine; this is the first to sit atop any ballpark in the world. After three years of work, the Indians secured the ‘corkscrew-looking’ turbine on top of the southeast corner of Progressive Field. It took only a few short hours to complete the installation of the 3,000-pound gadget because – smartly – it was assembled in the players’ parking lot to cut down on any and all transportation emissions and costs.

With the turbine installed and lit from within by colored LED lights, the Indians turned to the media to engage fans with very cool interactive digital kiosks to learn all about wind energy. Fans are now able to pedal on stationary bikes installed around the ballpark to try and generate as much power as the turbine. This is a fun way for the fans to enjoy the game, and at the same time learn all about the importance of clean energy technologies.

The Indians are true pioneers when it comes to all this, because this particular turbine is not the first ‘renewable energy project’ they’ve created. In 2007 the Indians installed a 42-panel solar electric system that generates enough power to run all 400 televisions located throughout Progressive Field with clean renewable energy. They also installed 125 recycling receptacles around the ballpark which has cut the stadium’s trash tonnage in half and saved the ballpark $50,000 a year.

With enormous help from NRDC and their Greening Advisor, the Indians have made impressive strides in improving the efficiency of their operations – and, the backend has helped them to save hundreds of thousands of dollars, while benefiting the environment and educating their fans.

NRDC Greening Advisor is a web-based environmental resource guide that was specifically designed to help each team and the operator’s of their venue or facility identify what they can do in their own city to pursue environmentally superior operations. It was this guide that was awarded the EPA’s Environmental Merit Award in 2008.

Among a million other things, NRDC has been assisting stadiums to reduce their environmental impacts by commissioning energy, waste, and water efficiency audits. This is not threatening or frightening, by the way, it actually saves the venues money. As an example, between 2006 and 2009, the Seattle Mariners reduced Safeco Field’s use of natural gas by 44 percent, electricity consumption by 17 percent, and ended up saving over $1 million dollars in only three years.

The Green Register is out there for you and I! They, as well as organizations like NRDC, are in our world in order to save us, help us, and create a better way of living for our children and the generations coming up behind. The Green Register also assists businesses whose services promote sustainable living. Architects, designers, consultants, builders, recyclers, sports arenas – anyone and everyone that plays a role in perfecting and cleaning our air and water is supported by The Green Register. This online community also allows businesses to promote, market and advertise their products and services in order to increase their profits – just by being a part of saving our world.

See that? Bubba Watson now wears the “green jacket” of a Masters’ Champion, but all of us can be champions in our own lives by learning about the environment and how we can make it better. We should head to any and all ballparks from now on clothed in jerseys created in the one true universal color – GREEN!

Until Next Time, Everybody!

The Levelling Film Review by Kam Williams Prodigal Daughter Tries to Reconcile with Estranged Dad in Haunting Parable of Biblical Proportions It's not very clear whether Harry Catto's (Joe Blakemore) death was a murder or a suicide.
